We would love to adopt a retired greyhound (or a lurcher.) We have contacted Forever Hounds Trust and discussed our children, work, house, garden etc and now we are waiting for someone to come and do a home visit. But I'm worried they will look at our fencing and immediately say there is no way we can have a sighthound. Our garden backs onto fields which sometimes contain sheep or cows and at other times are empty. Currently there is 4 foot stock fencing (post and rail with wire covering). My husband says he can easily raise it to 5 ft and has costed the materials to do this. One rescue centre we spoke to said they wouldn't rehome a greyhound if the fencing wasn't screened off so the dog couldn't see through it. Another centre said 5ft would be fine depending on the dog. Something I just read said that sighthounds can "pop over" 6ft fences easily. Just looking for some opinions from people who own greyhounds. We have until recently had 2 border collies and the fencing was no problem. They were agility dogs and probably could have cleared the fence but never bothered. One occasionally had a bark at the sheep or cows if they were right by the fence but generally they weren't too interested. Photo shows fencing with my 2 yr old and her friend.
