So upset

I have found out today that a friend has had her 18 week old puppy put to sleep and I'm devastated.
Background - she has always been scared of dogs and works away a lot, she also has a very unsupportive partner. So is not fed, walked or played with when she is away.
They were given a puppy several weeks ago and he was absolutely gorgeous. DH, DC and I have met him several times and he appeared to be a lovely natured boy.
Fast forward a few weeks , the reality of owning a dog has kicked in and she can't cope. She has said that he's been aggressive towards her and despite me begging her on several occasions to give us (as experienced dog owners) a chance with him she had him put to sleep last night - I am so so upset..

Are you sure she's not just sold him on? Wouldn't have expected any vet to pts a puppy even if she did say it was aggressive because nipping is pretty normal at that age.

She's told me that she had him put to sleep last night. I said to her that I was shocked that the vet would agree to do that to a healthy puppy.
I spoke on many occasions that it is completely normal for puppies to nip etc but she was completely convinced that he was a dangerous dog

I'd ask for the vets details who put the puppy to sleep, and tell her you are planning reporting the vet.
No decent vet would PTS a healthy puppy.

Might spur her into telling you the truth which is that she sold it on...

Sad WTF didn't she give the pup to you?

And who the hell gives a pup to someone who is so likely not to be able to cope?

Good idea re vets details I will ask her now..
I've lost count of the times over the last 3 weeks that I've offered, begged etc for her to let me and DH him. He was a gorgeous sprocker pup ..
I offered to buy him if she wanted to sell. I just cannot believe that she managed to convince a vet that an 18 week old puppy was so aggressive and dangerous that he needed to be pts

Poor baby.

I couldn't be friends with someone who could do this. Why didn't she give the pup to you, I mean what reason is she giving?

Sorry, didn't mean to post that to worry you even more, but it just seems so unlikely that any vet would just put a young healthy dog to sleep.

All she kept saying was that he wasn't safe to be re homed which I just don't believe.

It has made me re evaluate our friendship - it's like I never really knew her at all.

It is possible she has dumped him but why wouldn't she just have let us have him ?

Pride, maybe. Perhaps she didn't want to admit that you knew better than her so is claiming the vet accepted her view that the puppy was dangerous.

Hope you find out she's rehomed him. Would definitely do as pps suggested and try to find out who this vet is, if he or she even exists.

My DH said something similar. That she would rather make the dog responsible for the situation rather than admit that she couldn't cope.

She could have told the vet a pack of lies to convince the vet to put him to sleep. Even so, I amazed that a decent vet would not suggest a behaviourist fir a puppy so young.

I'm afraid I could not befriends with someone so heartless.

DH doesn't think he's been pts either so we just have to hope that the poor boy has got a second chance with decent family

Tbh if pup was not being looked after whilst she was away its possible pup died because of it and she's just too ashamed to admit it.

I didn't even think of that ... We offered so many times to have him permanently or even just look after him / dog sit when she was away as did another of our friends.
