My dog is really unwell- any thoughts?

My dog (two and a half) spend a day with a friend on Friday as we had to be in the city for the day. She had two long walks, seemed fine when she got home and yesterday morning. Early evening yesterday a friend called round with my dog's great pal, another young terrier. They played like mad and then my friend offered to take Vixdog out for a short walk with hers. While on the walk friend noticed Vixdog limping, by the time she got her back to us she was limping badly. My friend is very caring and careful, she hadn't noticed any sudden movement or squeak, or anything that might have led to the limp. At first we thought maybe she'd just had too much walking the day before, perhaps her paw was sore, perhaps her muscles etc. As the evening wore on she really looked in pain and wouldn't eat, so we took her to the OOH vet. He gave a painkiller jab, and thought she might need an x-ray on Monday. This morning her whole foot was badly swollen, and she looked really unwell and in pain- straight back to the OOH vet (we saw a different vet on call) who was baffled. She has a really high temperature, so she's had antibiotics, and more painkillers. The foot is hot and swollen, she is panting and her eyes look sticky and dull. Both vets (and DH and I) have looked gently all over the foot and there is no obvious puncture wound. It is a mystery- anyone had anything similar? We are in a rural area and she did briefly wade in the river as it runs into the sea yesterday. I wondered about Weever fish, but they are normally further out, and she surely would have squealed and swollen up right away? Vet asked if a cat could have bitten her, that is a no. An adder bite would have made her very ill very quickly. Spider? Anything else? I am really worrying, she isn't getting out of bed at all and looks very unhappy.

Yay! So delighted to hear she's home.

ExitPursuedByABear · 01/07/2016 22:03

Oh bless her heart. She will probably be whimpering for your benefit iyswim

Bastardspaniel has spent weeks in a cone and bandages and he gets over it.

SirVixofVixHall · 01/07/2016 22:10

Yes, I hope it all heals well. Hopefully the areas of dead tissue will come away, it is all still early days. Is your dog ok now Floral?

Yes fine at the moment thanks . Hope your dog is feeling better soon , I'm sure she's happy to be home .

Haudyerwheesht · 01/07/2016 23:46

Poor wee thing. She's a fighter though it's amazing what they can survive. Our cat was once very ill as a kitten and couldn't move at all. We actually thought she'd died but thanks to a very skilled vet she's now 13 and mad as a hatter!!!!

CatherineDeB · 02/07/2016 16:31

Lovely news Smile, very jolly bandages too!!

weaselwords · 02/07/2016 16:42

Brilliant news! If you can keep her off it, I've known honey to help heal a very nasty, necrotic wound in a horse. Good luck to her.

punter · 02/07/2016 17:41

great news so happy for her and you. Just awful when your dog is hurt or poorly.

SirVixofVixHall · 03/07/2016 16:47

Honey Weasel? Maybe Manuka honey? I had wondered about something like that. Bandage change tomorrow, so we will see then how the leg is progressing. She had to have her body bandage re-done today as it was all rucked up and the wadding was falling out. DH has taken her just to sit on the beach and see a few other dogs, to help cheer her up. She's been up and down a lot at night, we bought some cheap duvets from Tesco and have had those on the floor as her crate is too difficult for her when she has the cone on. DH has been sleeping near to her on the sofa, he hasn't had much sleep!

SloppyDailyMailJournalism · 07/07/2016 08:48

Still bandaged up and on strong pain relief, but the dead tissue has sloughed away and she is starting to heal. She is quiet, but she's so doped up on various drugs that it isn't surprising. Two weeks tomorrow since the bite, and she is still a poorly little dog, but alive and with all four limbs!!!

My dog is really unwell- any thoughts?

She looks very sorry for herself - bless her . Hope she feels better soon .

SirVixofVixHall · 22/07/2016 12:37

She is in the vets again today, every few days she has to be sedated for bandage changing/wound cleaning . There are areas of raw flesh on her foot and leg that need to scar over and that takes time. It will be four weeks tomorrow, since she was bitten, and she's still in treatment, bandaged up to the top of the leg, and not allowed to go to the beach or anywhere wet, to avoid sand or moisture getting through the dressing. She is very fed up! Off the strong pain meds now though, and the anti-histamines, so not doped out, aside from when she comes home after a sedation. Still a long way to go before she is healed, but at least she is alive.

First time I've seen this thread and it's brought me to tears. Your poor pup has been through so much and is still fighting. Wishing you all the strength in the world Flowers

PosiePootlePerkins · 22/07/2016 13:12

Ah your poor doggie. Sending Flowers and wishes for a speedy recovery.

ExitPursuedByABear · 22/07/2016 22:29

Bastardspaniel had a wound that took months to heal because of an infection. He still has a bald patch. He got over the months of bandaging.

BestIsWest · 23/07/2016 10:46

Aw poor girl.

SirVixofVixHall · 23/07/2016 16:05

Things have taken a very worrying turn. Yesterday she had an odd little episode after playing with another dog here at home, then in the night she had what at the time we thought was a panic at being back in the hated cone (she was sedated yesterday for a bandage change, and they'd put a powder on her leg that she was not supposed to lick in case it made her sick) . We took her into the vets at nine this morning, but she seemed fine. Then about an hour and a half ago, I was on my own in the house with her and she had a massive full blown fit. Now I know that she must have also had a fit in the night, but as we didn't get to her until it had ended we didn't realise (We'd heard thumping about but thought she'd been trying to get the cone off). It was terrifying. I thought her heart might just stop. I rang the vet and DH both in a total panic, DH was luckily almost home (I don't have a car) and so we took her immediately into the vets, the vet met us there. They ran bloods (she screamed the place down having blood taken) which are all normal. I'm very very worried now. We have to keep her quiet, avoiding anything at all stimulating or stressful, and we have diazepam tube things to try and insert rectally if she has another fit. She's had, we now realise 3 fits in the past 21 hours. Any advice or experience welcome, as I am so worried we will lose her. She is sleeping now.

Noitsnotteatimeyet · 23/07/2016 16:35

Oh no, how scary - Ddog and I are sending Vixdog lots of get well soon wishes

ExitPursuedByABear · 23/07/2016 16:43

Oh goodness. No advice but just wanted to give you a virtual hug. A friend's dog had epilepsy and they successfully managed the fits.

Poor pooch. Flowers

SirVixofVixHall · 23/07/2016 16:50

Seizures are a known effect of adder bites but usually quite close to being bitten, so we don't know why this is happening. The fit was so scary, she was thrashing around, frothing at the mouth and then staggering about the room knocking things over. I couldn't hold her in case she bit me, as obviously she wouldn't have had any control over herself. It went on for some time so we are also worried about brain damage. We'd just started to relax a bit and think she was on the home straight with her recovery.
