I'm a SAHM so, "about" a lot.

I have a one year old golden retriever. Beautiful girl. I've recently had her on residential training to help with recall. It's helped with her not lead pulling and "doing as she's told" a bit more but, I'm not allowed to let her off lead.....the trainer says she's nowhere near ready.

My question is: I feel really guilty all the time because despite 3 good walks a day and some garden play, she follows me about the house all the time. If I go into the garden to check the washing, she's there, right behind me. If I get off the sofa to answer the phone she's up and with me, like she's really needy and bored or... whatever (I've no idea!). The trainer has told me to just NOT acknowledge her all the time; don't have a running conversation with her; little physical contact etc etc but, like I say, it's virtually impossible. Anyone else have this?

Is my dog bored....sad....lonely....overstimulated?

I feel like I should entertain her more. (She's an only child Grin)

I guess it's because it's only me at home....I FEEL like she's bored and wants me to play all the time! Which I can't.

Eric follows me constantly, well no that's not strictly true he preempts a lot of my movements as well. So when the beeps go on the washing machine he gets up and waits for me by the the machine. When I pick up the peg bag he goes to the door. If I say I'm going to the loo he waits by the downstairs loo. He's not as well behaved as your dog though as he gets up on the sofa or sits on my shoulder uninvited so gets the attention he wants whatever I think. He's currently hunting for the newspaper I've just rescued from him because he wants attention because he knows stealing stuff is the quickest way to do it Hmm He'll give up eventually but it amuses me to watch him sniffing round trying to find it and standing on his back legs to get a better view.

I have two that follow me round everywhere. One is very large so is always in my way. I have to physically push him out the bathroom if I don't want him standing over me when I'm sitting on the toilet!

My two (working cocker spaniel and a Springer) follow me everywhere and that works for us. They're my pals.

dottygamekeeper · 19/06/2016 12:06

my two Springers sit with my whilst I am working (I work from home) and follow me everywhere - to the loo, to do the washing, to get the post etc. A lot of the time whilst I work they are snoring in their bed, but as soon as I move to get up, they are wide awake.

They are great company!

Bakesale · 26/06/2016 10:44

I've 2 Goldies - one doesn't appear to give a fizz where we are, the other is a proper snugglebum and follows us everywhere. In my experience a bored dog is a destructive dog so unless she's tearing the place apart I wouldn't have thought she was bored, maybe she's just a snuggley curious Goldie...

Eliza22 · 28/06/2016 18:19

Nope. Not chewing/digging or any of that. She snoozes a lot but then gets 2/3 walks a day...2 with a field run or ball throwing in the park. I guess she just loves company and needs to be close.
