Puppy vaccinations help!!

Hi all,

So we are getting our puppy on the 2nd July when he will be exactly 8 weeks, and a bit confused about all the vaccinations. It seems the ideal is to get him vaccinated at 8 weeks and then again at 10 weeks, but since we only get him at 8 weeks it seems a bit much to cart him straight off to the vets and put him through a traumatic experience day 1!

What would be the recommendation here? Any help much appreciated as very confused!

As an aside, it's worth building a positive association with the vets surgery while your dog is young if you can - if your vetis okeith it go unfit ten minutes every so often and play/ give treats. If they run puppy parties, even better

Actually there are a number of KC Assured Breeders who won't have vaccinated by 8weeks. There are quite a lot who believe it is best for puppy to be at least 9weeks before first vaccinations.

Completely disagree, with the possible exception of toy breeds, whose breeders should not rehome them until they are 12 weeks.

8 weeks is really too early for first vaccinations, and most puppies would be going to their new homes by this time.

Breeders who do give first vaccination often find that new owners take puppy to their local vet, who insists on re-starting the course entirely because they don't use the same vaccine - totally OTT for the poor puppy.

OP- you are right- leaving its littermates, travelling and joining a new house and family are all stressors no matter how gently and carefully it is done. I prefer to let the pup and therefore its immune system settle quietly in the new home for 4 or 5 days before vaccinating. This also allows any kennel cough or parvo it might be incubating more of a chance to rear its head (unlikely coming from breeder rather than dragged out of a busy pound with a high turnover, but still possible).
