Take a look at allaboutdogfood.co.uk. Go for nothing less than a 3 out of 5. Look for one with a named meat source as one of the first three ingredients and avoid anything with maize or wheat as many dogs are intolerant.
Price is not an indication of quality - there are plenty of poor foods with a top price tag.
In my view one of the best price to quality ratios is Skinners Field and Trial as its about the same price as Bakers/Pedigree/Wagg but far superior quality.

I've fed mine skinners field & trial salmon (fish suits mine better) or duck & rice £20-30 for 15kg, Autarky salmon £21 the chicken versions aren't as good ingredients wise. For a bit more money i was very happy with Lukullus dry from zooplus £30-35 which is cold pressed, its rated 4.4/5 on all about dog food so very good value, dogs loved it & looked great on it.

I feed mine on Aatu, it's 80% meat and no grains. It's not the cheapest but affordable for me as my dog is only small. I wouldn't be able to afford huge sacks of it, but for a small dog it's fine.

What do you consider to be costly? I use Millies Wolfheart and have two medium sized dogs and spend about £3-4 a week on each of them. I get huge bags delivered to the door.

I feed skinners and my dogs logs look great. It's roughly £22 for 15kg where I live.

We pay £49.99 for a 14.5kg bag of Millie's Wolfheart, excellent quality food and although its a big outlay because its high protein and not full of fillers like maize you feed much less, for us it works out around 93p a day for a 34kg Labrador.

Our 8yr old rescue border collie is fed twice a day. We have had him 4yrs. We use Nature Diet trays of wet food (£1.19 per tray) and Barking Heads dry complete food (£10 approx. for a 2kg bag).

Probably not the cheapest but he has been very fit, lovely shiny coat and not squitty since being fed on this diet for over 3yrs now. We had to experiment (a lot!) and some top quality foods gave him the squits but that is probably due to him being a rescue and we knew nothing about his early life and diet.

No food changes him from being bonkers though!

Forgot to say that we mix the Nature Diet (wet) with the Barking Heads (dry) about 50/50 in a bowl and give him this twice a day.

We use 1/3rd of a tray of wet and a mug full of dry for each meal. I guess I spend about £15 per week in total.

Mine are both on Skinners. The hypoallergenic Salmon & Rice one is quite pricey but one of the dogs needs the hypoallergenic food and the Salmon is better for her than the Duck. The other just has Maintenance which does her really well (she had puppy then junior before moving up to this a few months ago)

Some of the Millies are about £35 a bag - so much cheaper than Canagan (£60) which is also just meat and veg.

While some Skinners are reasonable for their low price (Turkey & Rice, Salmon & Rice, Duck & Rice, Lamb & Rice) do be careful with the others (Museli, Maintence, Working 23) as they are very poorly rated

Much depends on the dog too - the allaboutdogfood site ratings are very biased towards foods with high protein content, but that doesn't suit my dog's digestion (or if your dog's got pancreatic problems, for example, or puts on weight easily, etc.) As a working breed, he always did better on lower protein, working dog foods like CSJ or Skinners. I've heard very good things about Autarky too.

Definitely depends on the dog and how the dog gets on with it, which is how I've always judged the food. I'm sure that site can give some indication to start from, but it doesn't beat knowing your own dog. Mine loves Maintenance and is at a perfect weight with a shiny coat, good teeth and overall fantastic health!

22kg lab gets Natures Menu raw blocks, topped up with carrots and chicken wings (bought bulk from Asda or local butcher)
Works out at about £1 a day and she is in beautiful condition and health. Would never go back to kibble
