is this an acceptable alternative to leaving the dog at home?

Firstly, I've not yet done this. But over recent years I have seen a few colleagues do it- so

I have just started a new full time job. Currently mother in law drops in once a day to let the dog out- but generally loses control/ lets her bark excessively / pull etc ( dog is a 5 yo terrier who I rehomed)

I have realised that my new place of work is actually quite dog friendly. I think ultimately I may be able to have her in the building with me for some part of the day. I have an estate with dog guard/ there is always shady parking/ secure carpark so Windows can be left slightly open/ I can go out in all breaks/ car park is in a lovely large garden. Would it be fair to bring her to work with me- or is she beat left at home?

Any thoughts greatly appreciated -

My DH did this occasionally in winter when our pup was small, he has a massive van & was working in secure fenced in areas so he had her crate in the back with the van doors open. Lots of people went out & fussed her & let her out & she had a small walk or sniff every few hours. Once or twice she has been in the front for a few hours with the radio on & never came to any harm or got bored or chewed. We only did this on days neither of us could get home at lunch or work from home.

She's too big now though, so we have her in at doggy daycare.

My knackered rescue dog 🐶 goes to my friend in the village when I work.

She goes to my friends for 2 1/2 days a week.

My friend works from home as a graphic designer and knackered dog lies in a basket at her feet - then she takes her out for an hours walk, and I pick her up about 4pm.

I have my own key so if my mate has to pop out, I can drop dog off /pick her up etc.

Dog loves my mate, and is always happy to go, but she loves me best 😁

It works really well, and dog 🐶 is very happy as she has a bit of separation anxiety from her previous experiences...

I work three days a week and We pay for dog walker to come in mid morning, DP comes back at lunchtime then I'm home ( working from home) from around 2.30 onwards. If I wasn't able to WFH we would get dog walker back in mid PM.

Not read whole thread and dog dependent but I personally wouldn't.
I pay my dog walker £10 a day and she's out at least 2.5 hours (I have a real gem of a dog walker) I leave her with a Stuffed Kong before walk when I get home she's so knackered she doesn't even bother coming to greet me.

Is doggy daycare an option?

I use one that is brilliant. Mine go once a week but lots of digs there who go every day during the week.

The love it! It's like playschool for dogs!

How did you find it Tate? I'm new to dog ownership and I don't know what I'm looking/googling for.

BertrandRussell · 04/06/2016 08:39

If she's a little dog could you get a dog flap for her so she can go outside? Mine does this, but I do have a secure garden....

Smurfit · 09/06/2016 03:13

Personally, I wouldn't leave the dog in the car unless you could leave the windows right down (which would then be a security issue). Even in the shade I feel like the airflow would be nil and the temperature would still rise uncomfortably.

I leave mine when I work and take her to daycare 1-2 mornings a week. I would take her more often but it's simply not affordable. Admittedly, I am having some behavioural issues with her which I think are due to boredom and a touch of allergies but she's only ever on her own for a few hours at a time since I go home for lunch.

Exercise doesn't actually seem to make much difference to her but mental stimulation does. So perhaps if you spent some time (even 10-15min sessions) teaching her new tricks in the morning and at lunch time then she would cope better on her own for a few hours.

This is the doggy daycare that mine go to

Op, have a look on Facebook as well as googling dog or doggy daycare in your area. Ask on your local dog walkers group on Facebook as most areas have them.

Two of my three are going today, they love it! I am sorting out my bedroom today as a new bed is coming tomorrow and the third dog will just quietly chill near me whereas all three would be under my feet!

We are due a day our to Cardiff IKEA soon and I can leave all three dogs there knowing we can enjoy our day out and that that the dogs, my boys, are also having a fun day.

It is well worth the money.

My boy used to go to work with dh before he started running away when dh said "shall we go in the van?" One day he just decided no more and refused. We always thought he liked it.

Now he likes to sleep lots and goes out with the dog walker. It's great because he gets to play with his doggie friends.

On the thought of cars - I had a cage in the boot and he was fine there when leaving the boot open as long as in the shade

Employ a professional dog sitter/walker. They are experienced and have insurance, police checks etc and well worth the cost. The dog is happy and looked after and you can focus on work knowing all is taken care of. If it were a child, would you be happy leaving it in a car all day? It's the same for a dog really.

Good Luck.

We had a lady dog walker who take the dogs into her home all day or at weekends too. So all her charges have other dogs for company. Better dogs walking compares do that. Lesser ones i see out on walks pick up in a van, the dog gets a 20 minute walk at best and then gets dumped off back home. The owner thinks they're paying for an extended walk but they're getting ripped off. The dog in under stimulated and under exercised.
