Unfortunately it still seems that many people are unsure about how to find their perfect puppy without supporting puppy farming either directly or indirectly. My response is to look for a rescue puppy. I do not care which rescue you choose but please, please, please do choose a rescue puppy.

I am a fosterer for Many Tears Animal Rescue. Over the last 2 years my family and I have been lucky enough to foster, love, socialise and commence training and ultimately rehome 122 rescue puppies. We have fosterered all breeds, crossbreeds, sizes, mixes of puppies. I shall try to post some vidoes and photos but I am not very good with 'technology'.

As I mentioned I am a volunteer fosterer for Many Tears Animal Rescue - please search their web page for available puppies and doggies. At this stage many 'unhappy/unsuccessful' applicants shall respond with negativity but that seems to be the way of the internet.

Hey Hobbes, it's great that you are thinking about it, but remember that puppies 'mouth' all the time at the start and your DD may well think it is biting her if she is already nervous around dogs.

In your case I would look at a slightly older dog, you can ask Many Tears for their recommendations explaining your circumstances.

tooearlytobeup · 18/05/2016 22:15

This is my Many Tears pup, picking him up at 10 weeks old is the best decision we ever made. They do fantastic work.

Great thread. Well done op.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 19/05/2016 11:15

Pootle - does MT use fosterers in Scotland? It's something dh and I have been considering - maybe once he retires and is home full time.

We have a lab and a rescue lab-pointer cross, and would love to be involved in fostering rescue lab bitches, so they can find forever homes.

NettleFarseer · 19/05/2016 12:51

I didn't know that rescue puppies were a 'thing'Blush

Will definitely look into it. Thank you OP for bringing this to everyone's attention.

BagelGoesWalking · 20/05/2016 09:17

Other rescues one could look at:

Silver Fox Dog Rescue
Black Retriever X Rescue (not just retrievers!)
Balkan Underdogs
Help Pozega Dogs
Pro Dogs Direct
UK Romanian Dog Rescue
Heathlands Animal Sancturary
Next Chapter Animal Rescue
Griffon Adoption Group UK
Helen's Poodle Doodle Rescue
Hope Rescue
Four Paws Rescue

All have FB groups/pages and websites. Usually, FB groups are more up to date. If you can't adopt, perhaps foster. If you can't foster, join some groups and share posts. That helps to spread the word and find homes for dogs. If you can't do that, support the rescue by making your purchases via easyfundraising which raises money for your nominated charity.

And yes! Puppies are often born in rescue or rescued when very young with the mother.

What an informative thread OP. We have a rescue cockapoo and strangely enough one of the first questions we get asked on a walk is how much did she cost? When I say £85 from Dogs Trust other doodle owners are shocked that crossbreeds end up in rescue centres. I'm all for pointing them in the direction of Dogs Trust and Many Tears.

2cats2many · 20/05/2016 09:33

My dog is from Many Tears too. She was about 8 months when we got her. Very playful and puppyish but past all the chewing and pooping inside stage. I would encourage anyone looking to get a dog to consider an older puppy :-)

ChairRider4 · 20/05/2016 09:38

See rescue turned me down for fact I'm the only adult and in a wheelchair and felt I not cope walking etc

So I had to find a breeder who yes asked questions but was willing to talk .My boy is 18 months old and recent meet up was best behaved out his litter ..and yes he has at least two walks a day (I have powerchair ) and we do obedience class to

Puppynamechange · 20/05/2016 10:01

We've had a few dogs from Many Tears. Two lovely dogs, who we adopted in 2007, and both sadly died last year, and the new recruit. He was adopted in December as a puppy, and is now a giant!

Hello, I am so sorry if I haven't replied to anyones post but I only pop in here every few days or so.

STD - yes Many Tears do have fosterers in Scotland - I know that last Wednesday they did a foster run from Wales to Scotland (I'm not sure how often that foster run goes or what route they take, it might be only once a month - if you fill in a foster application form then someone from Many Tears will phone you - I will try to post the link here

I have been looking at stalking many rescue sites for over a year.
The issues are:
I don't want certain breeds. No high energy collies etc
We have kids.
No dog already.
We have cats.
Very few rescues will rehome a dog with cats. They are understandably worried about repercussions.
We have decided to go down the breeder route.

PacificDogwod · 22/05/2016 22:01

Aw, all those Shi tzu cross pups are just adorable but I will never do the puppy thing - Wolfie, gawn, you have one of them! GrinWink

Queenbean · 22/05/2016 22:02

Thanks for bringing this to the attention of anyone who didn't know. It is a surprise that so many puppies and cross breeds end up in rescues, I always thought it was staffies in rescues mostly!

What is a drown rack, as in they literally put them in cages and drown them? How is that possibly not illegal?

Wolfiefan · 22/05/2016 22:04

I love the bigger dogs Pacific. (Though if I got smaller I could have several no?)
I have decided to get the dog I have always wanted. Spent a year researching. I'm fairly certain I will never again persuade my husband to let me have one.
So wolfie will hopefully be getting a wolfie soon!

PacificDogwod · 22/05/2016 22:08

Fellow big dog lover here, Wolfie, and enjoy your dream dog Smile

Not for your benefit especially, but we fostered a greyhound who went to a family with cats. If I had not been present when he was cat tested and when he actually met the resident cat he was to live with and be broke my heart by being impeccably behaved I would NOT have believed that a grey could be so utterly, utterly disinterested in a fleeing cat. The bastard
I maintain the right dog is more important than the 'right' breed IYKWIM.

No idea what the drown rack is, and I am quite sure I don't want to know Sad.

Wolfiefan · 22/05/2016 22:11

Pacific I tried to convince DH about a greyhound when I looked at rescues. He didn't like them. I know. LTB!!!!!!
I met a lady over a year ago and kept in touch. She has cats with her dogs. If we can't have one of her pups she will guide us. Will take her advice and choose carefully. Already thought girl. Boys seem a bit more pushy. Described as boisterous.
This is NOT a decision I take lightly. It's a huge commitment.

PootlePoseysMa · 22/05/2016 22:15

Hello Wolfiefan, if you see a puppy that you like then none of your list will be an issue :-) I am a puppy fosterer, I have 3 children, I have a grumpy cat and 2 rabbits and 2 guinea pigs. I do also have 2 dogs that I own but Many Tears only insist on another dog if you are wanting to adopt an ex-breeder. If you are looking for a puppy or other rescue dog then they won't need another dog :-)

What would be your favourite breed/crossbreed?, x

Wolfiefan - how about Choice - currently being fostered by a very good friend of mine who has 4 children and a grumpy cat :-)
