I am just considering at the moment but would one day like a dig again.

We had a dog for about 2yrs, which sadly ended in rehoming. We jumped in without research or much thought and ended up with a pup completely unsuited to our family, lifestyle and (lack of) experience.

I don't want to make the same mistakes again so am starting my research early. I would love to rehome a dog but worry that we wouldn't really know what we were getting, history or breed. I'd like to get a breed of dog where I can check its character traits as it needs to be low-energy, child friendly and small. I've met a few king Charles cavaliers and they seem to fit the bill but also seem very popular and I'm guessing difficult to find one that needs rehoming. Don't want a puppy either.

Any advice or ideas? Thanks

Hip dysplasia is something labs are prone to but you can greatly reduce the risk by getting a dog where the parents have good hip scores.

Each has a number and totalled should not be less than 14.
Ideally you want to know elbow scores (which are between 0-3, 0is best and ideally you want a 0:0 elbow score) and to be PRA clear.

If you are too busy to maybe dog walk for a charity then I can't see you have time for a dog of your own.
Volunteer with the cinnamon trust?
Look at rescues like black retriever x where dogs are in foster so you have a better idea of any issues. And they offer follow up care and advice.
Read up on positive training and find trainers near you.
As to breed. Many breeds have potential health issues but the cav ones are truly bloody horrid. And I love them!
Consider the amount of walking and playing and grooming and mental stimulation you are prepared to give.
