We hope to adopt a greyhound in the next few years (we are waiting until youngest DS is a bit bigger - he is only 4 - and until we haved moved house). I adore them but have never actually owned one myself (I grew up with a lurcher but obviously had no real responsibility for her!)

What do I need to know?

Any excuse to show a picture of my beautiful boy. I have an 18 month old as well and although unsettled when I bought him home he now sleeps next to his cot etc he's absolutely golden with him (I don't leave them alone obvs).

I was totally naive when I went and got him - I had always wanted one - was in the position where I could and went to the kennels and said 'I'll have that one'. They were ecstatic as he had been there the longest. He is the most adorable creature ever and I love him to bits. He tootled round on walks with me (I have joint problems) and lies on the bed with me for a bit at night. He sleeps most of the time (they're pretty much like having a big cat). I have met so many friends through him.

They're hard to explain really. I think the cat idea is the best. They're not 'trainable' as such but it doesn't seem to matter as they're not any bother. Mine isn't anyway. He also doesn't bark at all. He's currently gassing me though.

I think it's appalling to hear that a greyhound chased and SHOOK another dog. My two dogs have both been aggressively chased in the past by greyhounds; to the point of my puppy crying in fear.

This is my two . The one on the left is now 9 , but you wouldn't know it , and the one on the right is new boy , adopted a few months ago after we lost our lovely last hound to cancer . Absolutely charming , but utter utter thieves . I'm still trying to work out who had the entire remains of last Sunday's roast chicken off the back of the cooker , and eat it without leaving any trace ( except for shocking farts for the next two days ) . I have 5 DC's , but new boy is emphatically my dog . In fact at this moment his head is virtually on my pillow . In many ways , they can be positively feline - the elegance and grace I think is what does it . But I've never yet met a hound that's too aloof to lean .

Yes, it IS appalling - no excuses from me Sad
I like to think that we have both learnt since then.
