My dog just attacked me and DH

We have a 4 1/2 year old cocker spaniel. Tonight he grabbed a balloon and started guarding it. DH took it off him and he attacked him and has severely bruised his arm and leg. This was after he drew blood from my hand.
This is so unlike him he wasn't threatened and we didn't take it off him- he did snarl at me last week when he had finished his dental stick as l walked past
I have a 3 year old grandchild and l am scared. I think he has to go.
Any advice l need handholding

Thank you for your comments EasyToEarTiger and to everyone who has commented on this thread.
Today has been strange in that he is back to being his normal lovable self Ddog not DH Grin but we know it is only a temporary stay of execution.
However short term measures are in place-- we have arranged a kennel for him when DD1 is down next week, DH visited it today and he will go in at midday and out by 11am next day. We are going on holiday so all safety arrangements have been made. Daily walks with dog walker ( sometimes 2) DC's will let him out into the garden morning and later on in day when home from work/ college. I have asked them not to take him out the garden right now. Hopefully on our return we will have our appointment at the vet school.
I will update this thread when l have news in case anyone is interested......

If I remember right, Sam phoned me a few days after the referral went through and made an appointment, the appointment was a few weeks in the future, but it wasn't a huge wait for her phoning me.

Though that was about 2 and a half years ago, so it might have been longer than I now remember.

My dog has quite complicated medical issues btw, it's not that she didn't help in that time, lol

inlectorecumbit · 16/05/2016 16:28

We have now got an appointment with Sam on 1st June. This will last at least 2 hours.
On holiday at present and said dog has been as good as gold for dog walker and DCs Smile

So l though l would update, sorry it has been so long.
Sam spotted right away that DDog was lame and that he "bunny hopped "when running. This meant something?? Anyway he had xrays etc anti inflammatory drugs etc and the pain seems to have gone.
He has never repeated his actions but perhaps that is due to the fact that we manage potential situations.
He is never in contact with DGD (x2 now Grin )
He is walked but kept away from other dogs that he appears to be frightened of.
He is only walked by me, DH or dogwalker.
He is not allowed anything that provokes a reaction including balloons or any thing with latex
He is not allowed bones ( his reaction to both real and ones from the pet shop is alarming.

When we go on holiday he goes to stay with the dog walker who has known him all his life and knows all about the incidents andd his behaviour although he says he has never seen any of it- which l suppose is good. He is very experienced with dogs etc

So all in all we are managing fine. He is sitting at my feet-my beloved boy.

I think we are doing the right thing.

Wow, great to have an update OP. Sounds like you're doing everything you can to do the best for your dog. I'm dealing with a dog with behaviour issues and it's not for the faint hearted.

Lovely update. My BIL has a cocker that has a lot of issues, and I think thank goodness they have each other as anyone else would have had him PTS years ago. We all know how to deal with him now when he stops with one of us ie on a lead around food, he's kept in the kitchen when grandkids are around and he's kept on a lead if we're not on a remote walk. It's hard work, but can be done where you all get a good quality of life. Well done Flowers.

JaneEyre70 · 18/07/2017 14:41

And incidentally, BILs dog is absolutely freaked out by balloons and goes mental if anyone has one near him........just a thought Grin.

minesapintofwine · 20/07/2017 14:47

Lovely update and outcome thank you op Flowers

jesterlaughing · 23/07/2017 23:02

Brilliant update!

I've also got a resource guarder. We know how to 'manage' it now, and thank god for up to date methods rather than dominance crap. Still hard though isn't it?

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 24/07/2017 13:24

Well done ! What a great outcome for you all.
Could I ask, is he a red cocker, by any chance ?
3luckystars, mentions cocker rage, above. This can be a trait in particularly, red cockers.
