Shit, I have somehow acquired a puppy...

Help!! She is a teeny tiny baby shitzu crossed with something equally obscure. She is slightly larger than my foot. I have zero experience with puppies. What do j need to do? I've made her up a bed with towels and puppy food in a dish near her. I got her a baby bottle to try and get her to drink milk (kitten milk!) from that. She is ignoring all my efforts and is snoring on my foot...

Refusing to use puppy pads... Only choice is to take her out isn't it?

I think you are going to have to accept that there will be some mishaps overnight, don't make a rod for your own back by letting her out all through the night. Where is she going to sleep tonight?

Theoneandonlyitchymcitch · 26/03/2016 21:45

She is currently sleeping on my lap, exhausted herself running about earlier... I am going to put her in her bed in a minute, there is totally a poo brewing... So will stick her on the puppy pad before sleep... Now I am worried that she won't sleep and will cry all night, as she is napping now....

Sorry, didn't make it clear, she will be downstairs in her bed in her space... Feel awful that I am two floors away... She will be ok, right? She has lots of blankets and water, and toys....

The only person using puppy pads will be you when you use them to mop up pee if she's anything like my one. For months.

Charlie hated, and still does, peeing in rain. She just would not do it at that age. So I would carry her around between toilet breaks outside. She would just pee all over me instead then as soon as came indoors. Whenever I think of getting another puppy I remember those months and I no longer want to get another puppy Grin.

Theoneandonlyitchymcitch · 26/03/2016 22:20

Oh god!!! To be fair she has not peed on me yet (so looking forward to that, not). I have put her to bed, but am going to creep down in a minute to check she isn't crying.... Is this easier or harder than having a baby???

dillite · 26/03/2016 22:34

Depends on how soft you are. I never did after the first 2 nights, and she only cried on the first independent night.

Theoneandonlyitchymcitch · 26/03/2016 22:40

She peed on her puppy pad!!! SHE PEED ON HER PUPPY PAD!!! I didn't see it as I left her for five mins... So proud! She has tucked herself into bed now. Good puppy girl

Aw bless! Don't worry Op, you'll be fine. Some people on this thread seem to know what they're talking about and have given you Lots of direction. Others are just you know - bored and frustrated. Would love to see pictures. I hope the puppy is doing fine. (Wondering if I'm going to be told to sod off to NetMum's now Grin)

Glad you've moved this thread to The Doghouse One, they were completely invaluable when a pregnant stray turned up at my door one evening, you'll find a lot of knowledgeable and helpful posters here. They literally saved a bitch and eleven puppies' lives so take any advice they give on board, they know of what they speak!

No Dixie she went to a foster carer from a hound rescue and whelped there, The Doghouse was a MASSIVE help though, really saved her and her pups, put me in touch with the right people.

Fantastic women on here.

Update, she is rolling around on her puppy pad, despite my best efforts to set up her bed in my room, next to my bed... She is going to keep me up all night isn't she?

Only if you let her! Do not play with her or pay any attention, as hard as it might be, as you do not want her to get into the habit of night times being fun times.

What crate size did you order? I went for a large one thinking that it would be a great idea for Charlie to have some extra space to play in. What a mistake that was! She instead decided to make half of it her toilet area and half her sleeping area. Sleeping area would often get confused with her toilet area. Feeding her in it sorted that problem pretty quickly though.

I have to admit that by month 5 or so I had given up trying to toilet train her- we had done everything by then, the only thing that was working was keeping her in her crate. Of course she was still taken out a lot and everything, but the only thing that worked for her was her actually "getting" that wee and poo happens outside. It literally happened overnight.

pigsDOfly · 27/03/2016 00:03

Not necessarily. Once she's had a play try to settle her for the night, turn out the light and hopefully she'll sleep for at least a while.

You might find it easier when you've got the crate. My dog was 8 weeks when I got her and came to me crate trained, she slept through the night from the beginning.

pigsDOfly · 27/03/2016 00:06

slight x post there

Theoneandonlyitchymcitch · 27/03/2016 00:13

She is being a nightmare now, jumping about, and squeaking at me. I am ignoring her. Perhaps I should just be cruel and put her back downstairs to sleep???

MattDillonsPants · 27/03/2016 00:17

Waaaah! She's gorgeous. I got a puppy a few weeks ago but I've been ripped off! Mine's MASSIVE! Hardly puppy-ish at all!

pigsDOfly · 27/03/2016 00:27

Oh dear. I'm afraid that if she were mine I'd be joining in the play. Can't resist a small puppy even at nearly 12.30 at night.:)

Theoneandonlyitchymcitch · 27/03/2016 09:24

She woke me up this morning by thrashing around in her sleep, and whimpering... She was clearly having a good dream! Took her out as soon as she was awake, did she wee? Obviously not. Fed her and took her out again, nada. Nearly trod on the little bugger as she insists on dancing around my feet Smile got to go out now for an hour or so to see my rather larger other animal... Don't want to leave her! She'll be ok, won't she? Roped in the mother for toilet putting out every half an hour... She just doesn't get that she needs to wee! (Doglet, not the mother). Next door's cat saw her this morning, literally froze and was clearly trying to figure out whether she was a threat or breakfast! matt what have you got? Oh and happy Easter all (even if not religious, it is a nice thing to celebrate - new life, fluffy baby animals and chocolate!)

Theoneandonlyitchymcitch · 27/03/2016 09:31

dill I ordered a 24 inch one as she is so tiny... Will see how she gets on with it... And obviously when she gets bigger will get a bigger one if necessary... Oooh it's all so exciting! And scary. But definitely exciting. Can't believe that she has only been here for two days, and already my life is seeming to revolve around her. I am fast becoming mad puppy lady...
