Shit, I have somehow acquired a puppy...

Help!! She is a teeny tiny baby shitzu crossed with something equally obscure. She is slightly larger than my foot. I have zero experience with puppies. What do j need to do? I've made her up a bed with towels and puppy food in a dish near her. I got her a baby bottle to try and get her to drink milk (kitten milk!) from that. She is ignoring all my efforts and is snoring on my foot...

Thanks LEM her collar is very lightweight, but having done more research, you are right, a harness would be better for her because of her breed. But this will do for now, at least so that I have a handle on her should she decide to bound off on a jolly not likely as she just shivers and sits on my toes outside- no joy on the wee front again outside since this morning. My friend who has got a ten week old spaniel cross suggested changing to biscuits (soaked in water as a PP suggested), until she pooes? Do you think that sounds sensible? To be honest she doesn't seem that interested in her pouches, she has had one pouch spread over the whole of today... I am not starving her, honest! She just seems to snack (then I take it away in between meal times)

Ahh you aren't a crap puppy parent! I know what you mean though, they are seriously hard work. We are thinking of having kids in the next few years and wondering which one is harder Grin
I am definitely PFB with my little one, I nearly cried the first time another dog snapped at him on a walk and I nearly burst with pride when he does something right at puppy class, have to try and hide my stupid grin!
Keep us informed (I'm way too invested in poogate!) hopefully the vet will have an answer for you tomorrow Smile

Theoneandonlyitchymcitch · 28/03/2016 19:13

She has put me off having kids for at least the next ten years, and I am 32!!! Grin at least you can put a nappy on a baby... (Now there is definitely a gap in he market for some sort of puppy nappy!) worried about having to work tomorrow. Like I said, I am currently prepping my mother to do the hard work... Location of preferred patch, location of lead, strict feeding instructions, toys and nap times etc. Then the vet visit in the evening, however I shall be shooting out at soon as I can at the end of the day. I wish I hadn't sold my car, then I could have popped back at lunchtime... Sigh.

Poogate has become my nemesis, yoo I am literally yearning for poo! Oh god, what has become of me??? My friend said hers didn't poo for three days when they first got her, so I am hoping it is just settling in time... She has got a long coat, so been looking into arse trimming techniques so nothing unpleasant gets caught... Seriously, need to give myself a shake!

I suppose at least the pups sleep through the night?! That's one positive over a baby! The thing I've found and I guess it's the same with kids is you think you've cracked something (in our case no wees/poos in house) and then one day he just forgets and goes wherever the hell he likes! Sooo annoying!
I'm off work at the moment following knee surgery so pup has been very spoiled sitting with me all day every day, due back in a couple of weeks so I need to try and wean him off me. I work from home most of the time but have a dog walker lined up for when I have to go into the office for meetings. Really nervous about the first time I have to leave him even though the walker will be in halfway through the day and he just sleeps all day anyway! He's the laziest pup I've ever met Grin

yoomoo · 28/03/2016 19:22

That's a good point actually hadn't thought of that maybe the lack of poo is just nerves as she's still settling in. I often wonder what has become of me, the first day we bought him home we both sat on the cold, tiled floor of the kitchen and watched in amazement when he weed and pood on the puppy pad! I'm 29 FGS 😂

Theoneandonlyitchymcitch · 28/03/2016 19:27

Oh no, sorry to hear about your knee! But lucky puppy for having you home all day at the moment. To be fair, I am headed for injury myself at this rate, puppy quite fancies herself as a ninja, very easy to trip over, nearly trod on her paw on Sunday morning by mistake, as in my foot touched fur and I launched my self face first into the floor rather than hurt her... Ouch. She is quite lazy, but I am blaming that on her age... Oh god, I just want poogate to be over, in fact I don't care if she poos inside, at this rate. I just want to make sure that a) she is not uncomfortable and b) she is actually a real life puppy, not just an adorable and realistic fake!

I have spent literally half my days since she has been here, sat on the kitchen floor, cooing at her cuteness and then remembering I am the leader and she must obey me, and trying to adopt a much sterner 'no'. Then laughing my head off when she chases the ball and falls over her own little legs and looks all confused! Bless her. This is def good practice for babies, right? Also, how many dogs do you have? And if you have more than one, how the flip do you cope?!

Ps it is so nice and reassuring to have some really great advice on here. I really am trying to do my best by her, and yes I may have acquired her unwittingly, and not under the best circs, but thank you to those people who have been minefields of information! Right, attempting poo gate...

yoomoo · 28/03/2016 19:55

Well if you do injure yourself I know a good knee surgeon 😉 Cooper is learning to move out of my way now as he's had too many blows to the head with my crutches! Poor thing I feel terrible but can't afford to injure my knee so if he's in the way he'll get knocked.
I only have one dog and will only ever have one! DH has mentioned a few times that it would be nice for him to have a 'sibling' but I've said no way! One is enough. I am in awe of anyone who has more than 1, especially that family on goggle box who have all the huge dogs!
Come on little lady we are cheering you on to end poogate!!

Theoneandonlyitchymcitch · 28/03/2016 20:06

Good to know, I may well require surgery... Not least because my mother let her out just now and I couldn't find her (o let her out of my sight for five minutes!!! The puppy, nor the mother! Although Catt trust either right now! On a quick March to sainsburys right now, need sustenance. Man who just walked by me clearly had fish and chips... Grrr. Little lady is cuddled up to her chew toy next to the radiator(I have a strong suspicion she has been chewing on my work dresses). Just walked past a house and heard the tell tale high pitched puppy bark... Good luck to them! Tell DH, NO MORE FLIPPING PUPPIES!!!! In no uncertain circumstances, one is enough! Pa I am too invested in this thread, just walked slap bang into a lamp post while typing this...there is no hope for me is there?

Welcome to the Happily Owned By Dogs club. Easter Grin

marmiteloversunite · 28/03/2016 20:22

I need to find something to do. Keep coming on here to check poo status!!

Here's my curly one. Four yrs old now but when I first got her I did wonder what I had let myself in for!!

Shit, I have somehow acquired a puppy...
yoomoo · 28/03/2016 20:32

Same here marmite Grin oh no I am definitely in the club too SDTG! I spend so much time chatting rubbish to him all day I bet he can't wait for me to go back to work! My brain has been fried from too much time alone with a puppy!

yoomoo · 28/03/2016 20:35

My pup is currently giving DH the puppy dog eyes to be let back in after refusing to do a poo! We know he needs to go but the little bugger just runs up and down the alley instead. I am of course sitting here laughing and not helping at all Grin

Theoneandonlyitchymcitch · 28/03/2016 21:20

Awwww she is too cute! Where does she sleep at night? We are trying to get Cooper moved down to the kitchen, tonight he's in his crate on the landing outside our bedroom. Then hopefully can progress to kitchen tomorrow!

Theoneandonlyitchymcitch · 28/03/2016 21:32

I am being brutal. She is sleeping downstairs... Horrible puppy parent! She is on her dinner ration...

OP posts:
yoomoo · 28/03/2016 21:35

No that's good we should've stuck to our guns when he first came home as I think it's going to be a few sleepless nights to get him settling in the kitchen alone. Any poo yet?!

Theoneandonlyitchymcitch · 28/03/2016 21:35

No poo!!! What am I going to do? i am going no poo at the moment....

OP posts:
yoomoo · 28/03/2016 21:38

I bet she'll poo as soon as you've gone to bed, they like to wait until your back is turned! Vet will hopefully have some advice though if she doesn't go tomorrow. Someone else mentioned she may have eaten it, do dogs really do that?!

Theoneandonlyitchymcitch · 28/03/2016 21:44

Not sure! She is definitely keeping ME on my toes... Bloody gorgeous little thing... I need food now... Pup needs to be taken out.... I luffs her

OrlandaFuriosa · 28/03/2016 21:51

I'm sure you have, but have you done the warm damp cotton wool round her anus trick recently? After a bit of tummy massage?

Mind you, our jrt would prefer to suffer hideous discomfort than get his feet wet or go out if it's raining, he has to check front and back doors...

He's better though if he has a coat on him.

Theoneandonlyitchymcitch · 28/03/2016 21:56

Doing it now... Damp sponge around her bum...
