Linguatula Serrata - tongue worm

Does anyone have any experience of this? Got a gorgeous rescue corgi/collie cross 9 days ago and it turns out she has this parasite. Vet has consulted and put her on panacur, frontal and an antibiotic, but says it is "experimental". Vet played down seriousness and risk to us, but having googled I am concerned -also for our existing dog. Any advice or experience would be really appreciated. Thank you.

Just seen your message whilst looking for information on Tongue Worm In dogs. I suspect my puppy may have this. Can you remember what the symptoms were

partystress · 03/10/2018 23:09

A lot of sneezing, some of them with watery blood. After she sneezed worm out (conveniently while at the vets), she stopped sneezing but then got a very swollen nose and bulging eye. This was due to infection and tissue damage caused by the 'worm' as it transited from gut to sinus. She was off food and listless.

Good recovery eventually, but lots of horrible moments along the way. Happy to tell you more by pm if it turns out that's what it is. Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery whatever it turns out to be.

Just seen this OP. Did you get your dog back? Is she clear of tongue worm now?

Jwalsh64 · 05/10/2018 08:20

Thank you. I’m doubtful he has tongue worm but at the moment we are just keeping an eye on him. He doesn’t have the symptoms you said your poor dog had. Hope everything worked out for you in the end. Will get back to you later if I need any more help. Thank you so much.

Hello. Yes, all ended well for us. I did post a separate thread, but long story short, she was quarantined after a horrible operation and at that point we weren't sure if they would ever declare her safe to discharge. However, when they spoke to experts overseas they eventually concluded there was no risk to us or other dogs and we got her back. She is a gorgeous dog and well worth all the worry we went through.

That’s amazing. I’m so glad she’s well and that you got her back. I’m pleased to say that it looks like my vet was being over cautious with my baby and he seems perfectly fine now which is great. Thank you so much for responding to my message, your support was a big help.

Ah that is great news. Thank you for updating, I had a PM from someone who had had a diagnosis a few months back and never heard the outcome of that one. I don't like to nudge it case it was bad news. Wishing you lots of fun with your dog.

How did this all end? Our rescue dog from Turkey just got the same diagnosis. We have had him for three months and are very afraid that we have also caught the parasite now. Hope to hear from you soon.
Thank you.

How did this all end? We got our rescue dog from Turkey 3 months ago and he just got the diagnosis. Now we are very afraid that we have been infected with the parasite as well. Hope to hear from you soon.
Thank you.

We were eventually told there was no risk to humans or other animals as the parasite lifecycle basically means you need to eat infected meat and become a primary host. Our dog is still with us more than two years after coming out of three months in hospital/ quarantine and seems fit as anything. She is no longer sneezy, and so we haven't had a nasal flush (to check for eggs) for almost a year now.

I hope it all turns out good k for you. Whereabouts are you?

Thank you so much for the fast answer. I sent you a PM as well if you want to discuss further there. We are in Germany. Very interested in knowing who the overseas expert was whom you talked to.

When I'm reading online it looks like humans can indeed be infected through sneezing out eggs - is this wrong?

nemodog · 17/11/2018 18:17

What about the nasal flushed for the first year? How often were they conducted and were there any findings? With what antibiotics was she treated? Were you tested yourself?

A corgi/collie mix sounds awesome. Our own corgi died from cancer in June at 11 years and we still miss him.

Hi I have emailed you as messaging didn't work for some reading.

Reason! We now know our dog is actually a Kokoni. Gorgeous.
