Iv always loved them as do dc and considering getting one. When Iv researched they haven't come up well as good dogs for kids yet one friend I know have on with 3 kids and it's been great (and put up with a lot!) and another friend I know has 2 with young kids and she said hers are amazing with her 3 young kids and she grew up with them and loved them and said really friendly, loyal and great with kids. Just wanted to see who else had them with kids and what they thought?

I'm really sorry to sound harsh but this thread reads to me as if you like the look of dachshunds, and have chosen on that basis, rather than having considered whether you are the right owner for a dachshund. Dogs should be chosen on your suitability for each other as opposed to whether you like the look of the breed.

I know what you mean JCW, but sometimes we do find ourselves drawn to a specific breed ... particularly when our friends or family have had a positive experience with them.
I chose the Shih Tzu (and you're right OP, even they're not without their issues!) on the following basis: good with children, good with other animals, not too big and not too small, the least yappy of the small breeds (we live in a flat, so it was important not to get a barky dog), fairly healthy and hardy, exercise requirements not too demanding.
The fact that he is the most beautiful thing I've ever clapped eyes on is merely a bonus Grin

Oh, and I didn't want a dog that sheds too much either.

Must admit OP, when I first started reading this thread, I thought you'd be flamed for calling them 'sausage dogs' rather than their proper name!
Loads of helpful advice on here though ... as always Star

I have a miniature smooth dachsie. I love her dearly but I wouldn't recommend as a family dog going on my experience. She is like a little Hitler barking her orders around the house. She only likes humans not other dogs, hates going outside as she gets dirty and wet being so low to the ground. She gers under people's feet, burrows into everything, has to be carried up and down the stairs , is a fussy eater, zero recall so is never off lead and took two years to housetrain.

We had a long haired standard when befor DS1 was born. He was a very quiet laid back and loving dog ( The long haired variety are allegedly more that way) Once DS1 was born he very quickly accepted him as a member of the family and once he was crawing DS1 would get his bottle and curl up against Henry while he drank it. Beware of long walks in the snow as the undercarriage can get a bit frozen. Sadly Henry did develop back problems and after very expensive surgery whcih did not work had to be PTS aged 9. He was a very long and large dog (like a setter with short legs) and apparently this doesn't help. Be sure to insure if you get one.

I too have recently had a hankering for a mini wire (preferably a black and tan). I grew up with one (and a Dalmatian - the Dacca thought he was the same size!) and saw one a little while ago and it reignighted my thoughts.

Ours was, as my DGrandfather used to say, full of character which was 'all bad' but he was great fun (apart from marking his territory around the house which displeased my Ma).

So if anyone knows of one who needs a home in Oxfordshire...

wallywobbles · 21/02/2016 17:30

My kids got bitten 4 X between they by their great grand mothers.

Pigeon there are quite a few sausage dogs around Oxfordshire. If you need a fix then there is a 'dachshunds of Oxfordshire' Facebook group that regularly go for walks.

Also have a look at www.sausagetails.com

PS. Your name has made me hungry...

lastnight that website just confirms my memories and makes me want one even more - can I blame you if I finally succumb? Grin

We have a 6 month old mini sausage
He is brilliant with both of our dc
We took him to puppy classes and to doggy day care every weekend to socialize him with all sorts of other breeds....I believe this has helped a lot.
he's a real snuggler and scabber when anyone has food!!
He sleeps in his cage through the day when we are in work and on our bed ( tut tut) at night.
The only problem we have had so far is his obsession with eating underwear!!!!!!! amusing 24hrs later when his poop is colourful but we are very mindfull of where we leave things now ( and it has helped with teaching dc to pick things up!!!!!
So far hes not a barker!
