We've been landed with a dog...

We live in a rural part of Australia...there are a lot of farms and vineyards here and today we'd parked the car on a bit of a lonely road which basically has nothing but vineyards either side...there was one of those honesty boxes with some jars of olives and we wanted some.

DH noticed a big, white dog in a pen (just some chicken wire) ...it was in the garden section of this vineyard....all on it's own and looking forlorn as heck.

We stood there and chatted to it a bit through the fence and a woman appeared, she said he's only 4 months, a Maremma...which is a sheepdog...and that we could have him.

She showed us his parents and explained that the owner of the vineyard had sold all the others and this was the last...and that the parents had now been de-sexed.

The parents were beautiful...the dog was in a poo ridden area...with a shelter and water but wasn't being treated as a pet...so we took him.

Blush

We've wanted a dog for a long time and DH is experienced...we're aware Marremas get big and need careful socialisation and we're seeing the vet on Monday..and taking him to a behaviour class on Thursday....he's had his first shots apparently...anyway...the thing is, he's beautiful...well behaved and affectionate but seems uncomfortable coming inside.

He's currently lying on the patio...I've tried to encourage him in...and he HAS had a little look around but then goes back out.

What do I do? He's big but young...I know he's obviously used to sleeping outdoors but is it kind? DH is making him a kennel tomorrow but really we'd like him indoors at night..the woman seemed to love the parents...and took our dog to say goodbye to his Mum....and gave us some advice etc...it wasn't a puppy farm was it?

He's gorgeous! He looks like he'll be a lovely friendly, silly family dog!

tomatodizzy · 13/02/2016 21:21

He is lovely! My two big dogs hate coming in, we are in a hot climate and it never gets as cold as the UK. They have the veranda and because we spend a lot of time outside they just prefer to be outside. good because they malt like mad. They come in more in the winter but they haven't set foot in the house since the end of October even though the back door is usually open during the day. The little one comes in for snuggles but at bedtime she goes outside to sleep with her two big "brothers". So I don't think it's cruel. Plus we avoided a lot of the puppy chewing stage as they don't have access to as many valuables in the garden. But I understand that as he's on his own it's probably best he's in and socialising with you. Unless you get him a buddy Wink

What a beauty. We have had two Maremma's in the past. They are fabulous dogs. Fiercely protective and excellent guard dogs. You may find he wants to live outside as he grows. They are 'on guard' all the time and like to be able to keep lookout!

Have lots of fun together xx

He is absolutely lovely. Sure he will be in and on the couch- soon. Yes there is a film out in Aus about maremma's looking after fairy penguins I think. What wine region are you in ?

He's gorgeous!

He looks like a Geoffrey or a George to me. Gorgeous.

MattDillonsPants · 14/02/2016 01:50

Thanks everyone Grin He came in last night, went to sleep by the door...didn;t want to lie on his blanket though....he didn't bark or anything apart from once when he must have heard a noise.

He didn't chew anything either! DH likes George but DD likes Oliver....I don't care and am at the moment calling him Mister Dog which he answers to.

Saffron McClaren Vale.

Oh one of my all time favourite places. I grew up in Adelaide, now live in Melbourne and we still drive over almost every year for a week at Aldinga (since Port W got too expensive).
I dare you to call him Fleurieu!

MattDillonsPants · 14/02/2016 02:21

Oh I like that!! Trouble is, because I'm English I say Fleurieu differently to the locals...they say Flu ree oh and I say it in the French way...

Oliver is a great name! He looks like an Oliver.

Dieu · 14/02/2016 19:48

Love the idea of naming him Oliver!
I'm sure he'll be very happy with you, after his less than ideal start in life. All the best and good on you for giving him a loving home!

I have an Oliver and I have to say your gorgeous fluff bundle looks like and Oliver
