why is my dog smelly??

She is a great big furry thing who gets covered in mud and/or fox/badger etc poo every day so needs showering off with or without (dog) shampoo depending if just mud or poo too.

Her anal glands are empty (vet checked). It isn't her breath or her ears. The smell isn't permanent but comes and goes and is really unpleasant.

Any ideas/ suggestions?

Lady bits? All the very necessary washing could be causing infections?

Hullygully · 22/12/2015 10:31

No, no infections (was at the vet yesterday re her fatty lumps and had all the obvious things checked out).

What smells? Her coat, her teeth or her bottom?

Wgat does she eat?

Hatethis22 · 22/12/2015 10:35

Ok. If she were a toddler I'd say she'd shoved something up her nose.

Hullygully · 22/12/2015 10:36

Nothing I can pin point, I have sniffed her entire body (like a loon)

She eats the best finest most expensive bloody organic kibble. And any other crap she can get her paws on of course.

Hatethis22 · 22/12/2015 10:38

Was she puzzled or pleased with the sniffing? Grin

Hullygully · 22/12/2015 10:40

She didn't mind, she's a terribly stoical beast.

My dog had a strange aroma about him earlier this month and when I was trying to work out what was different the only thing was that he was having dog treats from his advent calendar (2 a day) , normally the only dog treats he eats are gravy bones . We got rid of the calendar and the smell has gone ,may be coincidence but who knows .

Hatethis22 · 22/12/2015 10:46

Whenever I try to check one dog the other one gets in the way helps.

If she's showing no signs of discomfort and there's no redness or outward sign I don't think there's much you can do.

Mrsunders86 · 22/12/2015 11:07

How old is your dog? My oap dog started smelling recently, took us ages to figure out, he'd been peeing in his bed! Bought some puppy pads to put in his bed and increased his baths and he smells fine now..probably unlikely but worth a sniff of the bed!!

Hullygully · 22/12/2015 11:20

She's 9, but this smell has been going on for years...

OP posts:
antimatter · 22/12/2015 11:37

Ears?

Mrsunders86 · 22/12/2015 11:40

That was my only idea other than the ones already covered...good luck!

Mrsunders86 · 22/12/2015 11:40

No, I'm back.. When you say it comes and goes how long does it last for?

Hullygully · 22/12/2015 11:48

Good question, it varies and sometimes longer than others and stronger than others.

knobblyknee · 22/12/2015 12:41

What does it smell like? Fox poo/doughnuts/4 week old dead squirrel? Could she be rolling in something dead? Or otter spraints?

Hullygully · 22/12/2015 12:59

I don't know how to describe it, but it's not one of the poo roll smells. I used to think it was her fur not drying thoroughly but it isn't.

OP posts:
Hatethis22 · 22/12/2015 14:20

Is it a damp smell? The sour apple smell of damp clothes that have been left wet for too long?

GnomePhone · 22/12/2015 14:28

Feet?

Hullygully · 22/12/2015 15:03

it's a bit like that hatethis, sort of sharper tho.

No, not feet.

Could it be the oil her skin produces to waterproof her fur?

OP posts:
knobblyknee · 22/12/2015 16:30

Wet dog but sharper, comes and goes. That doesnt sound like anal glands, teeth, sebaceous cysts, yeast or licking.
I wonder if she has a bacteria load in her fur? Give her a proper bath with shampoo, dry her off and see what happens.

Warmworm · 22/12/2015 16:58

My furry dog gets smelly and I'm sure it's because she gets wet every day (rain, river swimming, rinsing mud off). It's a sort of cheesy smell. I think it's because, even though she does dry eventually, it takes a while and her coat must harbour some fungus/ bacteria or something that likes the damp environment. She has a dense, curly coat.

Only having her clipped solves the smell. A bath works for a day or two but the cheese returns. It can be quite vile! I'm contemplating buying one of those dog drying bags, but they're not cheap.

Hullygully · 22/12/2015 17:14

Yes clipping gets rid of it for a while. What do you mean by a proper bath?

OP posts:
Hatethis22 · 22/12/2015 17:15

You could try using medicated shampoo on her and try to avoid washing her every day? Mud should fall all over your floor brush out once she's dry.
