Help, I need to 're-home my uncle's dog

Hi, my elderly uncle is unable to carry on looking after his 7year old Jack Russell. I've called the local dog rescues but they are so full. Can anyone help me? Bertie is a very lovable, lively little boy. Great around small children and keen to learn....

I suggest you get in touch with The Cinnamon Trust 01736 757 900. They help elderly people care for their pets with a view to keeping pets and owners together.

If you can avoid a kennel type rescue centre then do. Not that they are bad places, but a jack russel may well be overlooked, especially an older boy. Terriers can be hard work and it can put some people off.

Give your local vets a call and they may have the number for local breed specific rescues.

Avoid things like GUMTREE like the plague as there will unscrupulous people cunts out there, scouting for dogs to use as bait/dog fighting. :(

Would you consider taking him on yourself? You would get lots of support/hand holding on here and that way your uncle gets to still see his beloved dog. not tearing up at all at the thought of him losing his pal, no no not at all Of course you may not be in position to do so, but if you could, give it a go, they give so much back.

Again another vote fo the cinammon trust, they do wonderful things.

Which area are you based? We may be able to suggest something if you narrow it down to a county or area :-)

Where abouts are you/the dog based?

Terrier Rescue are wonderful. I got my last rescue dog from them

Definitely call the cinamon trust - I used to volunteer for them and we ended up fostering our dog through them.

If they have volunteers in your uncles area they may be able to give enough support so the dog doesn't need to be rehomed

AlpacaLypse · 08/12/2015 15:11

Another vote for Cinnamon Trust as first source of information. Also have you spoken to breeder?

And yy, agree with pps, don't whatever you do advertise on Gumtree or FB selling pages.

stirrupleathers · 08/12/2015 15:51

Cinnamon TRust would not be an option as he will not be returning to his own home but going to live with my mum. My mum is currently looking after Bertie but she can't continue caring for him due to work commitments. I can't have him as I have a little dog myself and my husband has said NO!! I'm in Leicestershire my parents are in Warwickshire ...doggie from the Cotswolds where my uncle was living ....

The cinnamon trust may still be able to help they place long term foster dogs that are never going back to their owners .

Lonecatwithkitten · 08/12/2015 17:19

Definitely try Cinnamon Trust and your Uncle is not that far from the National Animal Welfare Trust so they would be worth a try.

sooperdooper · 08/12/2015 18:15

Another vote to say Cinamon trust may still be able to help - we initially had our dog from them in similar circumstances while they looked for a permanent home for him (that was 3 years ago, we just fell in love with him!) they will try and find a foster home with local volunteers rather than put the dog in kennels - good luck

Cheerfulmarybrown · 08/12/2015 18:57

Cinnamon Trust will not rehome so despite all the posts I doubt they will be able to help you.

Try

terrier sos

terrier rescue

jack russell rescue

This is not an easy time of year to rehome maybe if you could foster yourself until a space becomes available

sooperdooper · 08/12/2015 19:47

Cinsmon trust rehomed out dog from his elderly owner to us, it's not their standard approach but they look for foster homes with local voountees if it stops a dog going into kenneks

Scuttlebutter · 08/12/2015 19:58

Please, if at all possible, (and I realise it's not ideal for your mum) could you consider hanging onto the dog until after Christmas? It's a very difficult time for rescues, most of which are run by volunteers and we find it this time of year extremely taxing for a number of reasons.

You could try the Oldies Club who specialise in older dogs and have nationwide coverage.

A general note on relinquishment (not just for OP, but as a helpful list) - it's enormously helpful if the relinquishing owner can :- gather together the dog's paperwork, especially any chip or vax info; provide any info on health issues or behaviour issues (it won't stop the rescue taking it, but we really need to know) including medication, supplements etc; provide info on what food the dog likes and is used to eating; person handing over is willing to be flexible and reasonable about time and place of handover (bearing in mind it's likely to be volunteers who are providing transport etc).

You could also keep trying your local all breed rescues, though most of them will be struggling with their usual pre Christmas bulge.

Thanks so much for all your posts of advice. We may have found a home in the country with another terrier. Im waiting to hear back from the lady as she wants to meet him. Also my sister's friend is interested and has taken him today and tomorrow to see how he will get on with her family. If this all falls through then I will approach one of the rescues you've provided. I won't be going to gumtree I can assure you. I'd have him here over Christmas but my daughter has had a nasty infection after having a ruptured appendix so It will be weeks before we get back to normal.

Gosh, it sounds like you have a lot on your plates! Sad for your uncle, but pleased it sounds like the little chap will find a new home Flowers

stirrupleathers · 11/12/2015 22:22

Possible new home fell through. My sister put him on gumtree without my knowledge and 8 people wanted to rehome him. I've told her to take the advert off....
