Dog tags... what does yours say?

Pigleychez · 11/11/2015 20:20

Been to puppy class and was told it should have your name and address, postcode and phone number on it or we wouldnt pass the course.

They sell the tags so is this just a ploy for you to buy another? Puppy is chipped so all this info is on there. Ours currently has his name and our phone number on it.

What do you have on your dogs tag?

It's amazing how many dog owners simply don't know there is a law regarding collars and tags and what's on them, let alone what the details of the law is. You'd think with something as common as dog ownership someone would have figured out how to make the law known. I don't think the vets, the rescue where I got my dog from, or the people running the training classes have ever mentioned dog identification tags.

I'm now meeting the requirements of the law at the moment, but I'm most of the way there; my dogs' tags have their name, the house number and postcode, and my mobile number. It's close, I really should have put my surname instead of the dogs' names, and made room for the road name, but it's enough to get them home in an emergency, and the full details (if needed for any more serious reason) are on the chips. I think. I need to check the chip has my current address for the older dog. I don't even think I know how to get the chip updated - is there one central place to do that? Or do I need to know what type of chip it is? That's my research project for today; working out how to get the chip details changed.

peasareevilcreatures · 12/11/2015 11:16

My dog has "chipped" and my mobile number on it. Oops, better get a new one

ScrappyMalloy · 12/11/2015 11:29

When I got my tag engraved on the machine in Pets At Home, it had all the information that needed including on a sign on the machine.

I realised afterwards that I had put my landline on both tags (doh -I am sure I wouldn't just sit at home if one of them was missing!) so have had two more made with my mobile.

We are doing the Good Citizen thingy this week too, so going to put both tags on her collar right now Grin

YourBubzYourRulzHun · 12/11/2015 11:33

Mine have house number and road, postcode, mine and DH's mobile numbers and microchipped. I never put the dogs' names on them.
They have Indigo Tags so they sit on the collar rather than hang from it. They can't lose them that way.

Lonecatwithkitten · 12/11/2015 11:36

Captain the vast majority of UK microchip details are held on pet log if you go their websites there are forms to update your details there. They will also tell you if your number is an Anibase chip which has it's own database - though good luck with getting a human being to answer the phone there.
As a vets practice we advise all clients getting microchips that they also need a tag and what needs to be on that tag.

Collared · 12/11/2015 12:50

Ender - I don't know really. His scenario was that someone would pet my dog, take note of the address and then assume that there was no one in the house. I did tell him that was what you're legally supposed to have on them but he wouldn't have it

Carpaccio · 12/11/2015 13:09

My surname, postcode and two mobile numbers (mine and partner's).

She is chipped and all details updated in Pet Log.

When I have found dogs roaming on the roads, they have had phone numbers on the collars which I have found very helpful.

insan1tyscartching · 12/11/2015 13:16

Ours has my surname, house number and postcode and home and mobile phone number. No name of dog though as advised by vet when he was microchipped.

CrabbyCockwomble · 12/11/2015 14:01

On one side:
House number, postcode.
Three phone numbers (landline, mine and DP's mobiles)

Other side:
"Microchipped, neutered"
Practice details of vet.

CaptainKit · 12/11/2015 15:39

Thanks LoneCat - I think an evening of Pet Log investigating is in store. I've got 11 pets currently chipped, and am ashamed to say I couldn't be certain how many of them had the current address and how many are out of date - most definitely time for an admin session!

Does anyone know if the £16 charge to upgrade to Petlog Premium is per owner or per pet? £176 seems rather steep to get them all on premium if that's the case. Important to do, but painfully expensive.

CaptainKit · 12/11/2015 15:54

(Just to add to the above question; I've contacted the Kennel Club through their petlog pages to ask for clarification. Will update with what they have to say. I'm annoyed at the prospect of having to pay so much, but part of that is annoyance at myself for not upgrading each pet's chip as it was done, and so spreading the cost.)

DolphinsPlayground · 12/11/2015 16:10

Ffs I
Just got one from pets at home today and they didn't advise that it needed out name as well as the dogs so just have dog name, number of house and postcode and my phone number!

Do you think I could go back and get the to redo??

DickDewy · 12/11/2015 18:06

I thought the one thing you're ^not^ supposed to put on a tag is the dog's name.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 12/11/2015 20:11

No you're not, absolutely. CaptainKit please change your dogs' tags, anyone could steal them simply by finding their name on the tag and calling them away.

CaptainKit · 12/11/2015 22:35

The older dog would likely go with anyone who fussed or fed him and the pup cares more for food/running than anything else, but as he's a lurcher he's staying on lead until we've got a lot better at recall, which we practise somewhere fully secure. He'll outgrow his collar soon enough and as the tags are a part of the collar they'll both get new collars and new tags when that happens and I'll get the tag wording right. More for the legal thing than for preventing theft - if someone is close enough to read their collar they are close enough to grab their collar and walk away with them never mind knowing their name, so I don't buy that they're more stealable when they have names on their tags.

MaitlandGirl · 13/11/2015 00:44

Mine wear 2 tags - one with their name and my mobile number on, the other with the vets name and number and microchipped on.

I've really no idea of the law here but with 2 toy breed dogs it's impossible to get more on the tags than 1 line per side. The tags are 1in in diameter an no way could I get my address on them.

They also have collars with their names and my mobile number embroidered on them in case they lose their tags.

ender · 13/11/2015 08:32

I think it's important for the owners name to be on the collar, to help identify who the dog belongs to.
Can't see any reason why dog's name couldn't be on as well if that's what you want, seems a bit pointless though. I don't buy the argument that it makes dog easier to steal. Mine would go to anyone whether they call him by name or not.

ScrappyMalloy · 13/11/2015 11:37

I think it's a legal requirement to have the owners name on the tag.

LibidinousSwine · 13/11/2015 13:12

Mine have their name (contentious, but in an accident I'm sure it would be comforting for them to be spoken to by name. Come to think of it in the worst case scenario that they were stolen, I think I'd prefer them to still be referred to by name?) my mobile no. (I will be out searching, not sat primly by my house phone awaiting a call) and "I am insured"
No idea why that would be relevant really Hmm

PacificDogwod · 13/11/2015 13:15

It's not a matter of choice or taste what goes on a dog's tag. As others have said: owners name, address (we have house no + postcode), tel number.
You can add whatever you want, but that's the legal requirement.

I've been told any stray dog picked up would be scanned for chip anyway, so no need to say 'chipped' and to avoid the dog's name.

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 13/11/2015 22:13

There is no requirement currently to scan dogs for microchips and sometimes chips can migrate so might not be where they would be expected to be. I have 'mircochipped' on our tags in the hope that if they ever needed to be scanned in the event they went missing the person scanning them would have a damned good attempt if the first pass of the scanner showed nothing. Mine wear Indigo tags too so they would have to lose their collars to lose their tags.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 13/11/2015 23:00

I have our surname, house name and postcode, mobile number, house number and microchipped. It's pretty much general knowledge that you don't put the dogs name on the disc.

ilovesprouts · 18/11/2015 14:43

Mine has my postcode and mobile number and a disc to say I'm chipped .

Hatethis22 · 18/11/2015 14:48

www.thekennelclub.org.uk/training/good-citizen-dog-training-scheme/information-for-dog-owners/dog-identification-tags/

Mine have our surname, the house number and postcode, my mobile number and 'I'm microchipped' on. We have the large size Grin
