Whippet/greyhound puppy

My dad's beloved greyhound died earlier this year aged 13, she had cancer and we had to have her put to sleep. He was heartbroken but is starting to feel ready to get a new dog, he lives alone in rural France (surrounded by fields, idyllic for dogs), and is very active (chops wood and manages his land), but really misses his dog's company. Problem is that we are not sure how to go about buying a puppy, having got our last dog from exchange and mart! He definitely wants a pup rather than an older rescue dog, and loved his greyhound and her ways so much that he is sure he wants a grey, whippet or a lurched. Of course we want to avoid puppy farms, but it's proved hard to work out what the 'done thing' is these days when buying a pup. Are ads on places like gumtree likely to be from puppy farmers, even if pics suggest they are living in a private, comfortable home? And, does anyone know of a reliable breeder in the London area/southeast? He is planning to buy a pup in the spring and stay here in London with us until pup is old enough to have rabies shots/get pup passport (we have a big garden), and travel back to France with him. Any suggestions very gratefully received.

Definitely avoid sites like Gumtree and Pets4Homes. There are a minority of decent breeders that may advertise on sites like that but there are easier ways of finding them!!

My first port of call would be the breed club, the National Whippet Association covers your area specifically but there's also the Whippet Club which covers the whole country. They should be able to point you towards breeders who are planning litters.

There's also a huge list of whippet breeders on Champdogs and they tend to have a much better calibre of breeder on there than advertise on the free ads. It's not an absolute guarantee but it's a much better place to start.

Thanks so much, really helpful. Am going to check out those sites.

It's highly unlikely that you will find a greyhound puppy. They only tend to be bred and sold for racing. It's very rare to find a greyhound puppy in a rescue but they do crop up very occasionally if they appear to have no interest in chasing. The youngest you tend to find greys is 2 years old.

Lurcher puppies often come into rescue, someone could have dumped a litter or a pregnant bitch and then the puppies would be born in rescue. It's definitely worth looking into, as rescues tend to have the dog chipped, neutered and a clause in your adoption contract to send the dog back to them if things don't work out. Although a decent breeder should take the dog back if you need them to.

Good luck with your search, I have a greyhound and he is ace :)

EGLR frequently have puppies either born with them or coming in as small puppies. They've had 5 whippet lurchers who are 8 weeks old come in just this week (very, very cute).

If he rang them, I'm sure they could organise a homecheck (they have an amazing network), then its a matter of keeping an eye on their FB page to see what turns up. My younger dog was born in foster with them, and they had over 20 puppies born in under 2 weeks including his litter.

Beautiful dog CunnyFunt! We would so love another greyhound, just so elegant and funny and fab. Thanks also for the rescue links CMOT, am going to register interest and take it from there. Can't stop looking now! Cheers, feel like I am on the right track!

Do you think your Dad might be open to a Lurcher of unknown mix - mum known, pups born in rescue, dad - anyone's guess!

Macduff is the last of a litter born in rescue at Lurcher Link. You can click on a link in the OP of his thread to read the full story of the pups and their mum.

I know LL have rehomed to a couple in France once before, so may possibly consider again under the right circumstances - worth an email if your Dad would be interested in him.

Also found This cutie on LL's dogs from other rescues section. Don't know anything about that rescue or their rehoming policies though.

is it greyhound/whippet or nothing? Seems a shame to pay lots of money to a breeder when there are so many rescue dogs, including puppies, in rescues.

Why doesn't he look at his local
SPA rescue in France? Gorgeous failed hunting dogs/griffon types...
