Going to see a rescue greyhound tomorrow - what do i need to know?

Hi first time on this board - waves to everyone.

After ALOT of thought we have decided that it is the right time for a dog. After ALOT of research we have decided on a retired greyhound.

We have been invited to go and see a bitch tomorrow. What do i need to ask the rescue centre (reputable as far as i can tell - well known, good reviews etc)?

They are very keen on getting the right dog for the right family but what should i be asking, what do i need to know?

Thanks in advance

Greyhounds are BIG and I can see how their sheer size could be intimidating tbh.
My DS4 is now 5 and our grey's nose is higher than the top of his head…

Otoh I'd not let your DD 'decide' what dog you are getting - just get the right dog, so wait until you are sure. Meet lots of dogs, take your time, allow your DD to get more comfortable about them.

We fostered a dog for the rescue we then got our 'forever' dog from; that was a great way to learn a bit more about grey/sighthounds, for all of us. Although we did totally fall in love with him and it was hard to give him up even though we always knew he was not ours to keep. Maybe you could consider that?

The right dog for you is out there - keep the faith! Wink

Ooh we love ours, she is just 1, we rescued her at 17 weeks, she had been returned to the rescue and (we think) shouted at lots Sad

She was terribly shy and timid, now she is a huge, lazy, ridiculous beast and we love every inch of her! Grin

I would never have considered this breed (no idea why) but advice on here made me go for it and i would never have another breed now I don't think!

Just be mindful that they are trained to chase fury things. Ask how they are if they see a cat. Unfortunetly a few will chase and kill small animals.

Prey drive depends largely on the individual dog, our foster dog was cat safe and went to a family with a cat; our own dog Cannot Be Trusted, but co-exists with (well locked-up) guinea pigs.
Also, ours will chase small furry things that run away from him, he is scared of hissing cats Grin - oh, and he never raced, so training has nothing to do with it, instinct does.

YY to a furry lurcher - all the good traits of a grey and fluffy with it
still the same problems with prey drive though - it is in their nature
