Looking for big, friendly, 'nice' dog!

Looking for dog No2. Must be medium or bigger, very good temperament, able to be let off lead (so no sight hounds etc). Must be fairly intelligent breed.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Labrador, probably working type but not necessarily high end field trial champion type...

Intelligent, trainable, fun.

Issues being intelligence often applied to illicit acquisition of "food" and shedding!

Aww I want winston but I have a very loony 6 month lab girl. She is very bright but has endless energy and if I let her off the lead she would probably keep running until she found some lovely fox shit

Intelligent as in trainable or intelligent as in problem solving? And how active and how often would they be left?

Black Retriever X pretty much specialise in the type you are looking for - mainly pretty big dogs,but well assessed for temperament. They are also very often looking to place their dogs in homes where there is another dog or dogs.

Themo mentions setters... I have an English Setter. They can be ridiculously strong willed and will lollop off and be hard to recall, especially around other dogs. The working type are marginally easier to train than show types. I love my dog but he isn't the easiest!

I'm highly biased though , I just got an 8 week old retriever puppy and she's so chilled out it's ridiculous . Im sure there's madness to come but she's great.

We are somewhat limited in the Lavender house. DH thinks that the only type of dog that is acceptable is a Lab, maybe a Golden Retriever at a push.

I would like something that isn't a Lab when Lavenderdog goes, she has been such a special dog that I feel that I need a change so it will be a Golden Retriever as I am sure I can get that past him.

Toller . Ticks all your boxes - medium, active, highly trainable - and gorgeous

St. Bernard - they're great if you've got young kids that need watching. Not sure on their intelligence but their temperament is very good :) hope this helps

He is a lab/staffy/collie cross. The best natured affectionate dog I have ever met. He lives happily with two cats and doesn't even chase rabbits when they wind him up something chronic. I rarely use a lead unless we are on busy roads with a narrow pavement or where there are signs telling dog owners to do so - I run with him off lead.

Many Tears just phoned me and offered me her Golden Brother ( subject to home check) but only if we collect him this weekend, and we can't!!!!

Disappointing Hopping, but that is a very very quick timeframe for home check and to make sure you are all happy with the dog/situation.

hopping why can't you take him this weekend ,you've got 4 days to prepare - we got our pup on the day we visited ( battersea) and just rang my sister on the drive home and told her to go buy stuff , it was the way to go as we had no time to overthink things .
