Advice needed - unhappy with dogminder

On the advice of MN (here) I sorted a dogminder for our Ddog - a lovely neighbour who is happy to have Ddog for the 2 full days I work. Neighbour has a dog of their own who Ddog is fond of and they play well together.

However, it turns out that lovely neighbour and her husband smoke in the house and now Ddog is coming home stinking of smoke. I did know that they smoked but just assumed that they smoked outside, like DH does. Now my head is in a twirl - I'm worried about the effects of smoke on Ddog and how it may harm her. I don't want to upset the neighbours as they have been so good to us. And I can't afford to pay for dogminding as thing are tight enough as it is paying for childcare. I can't ask work to change my hours as I have only started and am on probation for three months. And I have to work as we are struggling to pay the bills without me bringing in a wage.

Sorry for the rambling. All that I keep thinking is what a crap owner I am and that I'll have to put the dog up for adoption as I'm not taking care of her properly. Am feeling very stupid for getting a dog without thinking about the future.

I doubt someone smoking will do her much harm ,in 'the old days' ,most people smoked indoors and had dogs that lived long ,happy lives . If the smell is that bad purchase one of those doggy deodorants or a dry shampoo and give her a spray when she comes home . Glad you got something sorted ,good for you !

I think in an ideal world the dog would spend time in a smoke free zone. But look on the plus side - the neighbour is doing this for free (or maybe the odd bottle of wine or two!) the dog has company and you and the family have a loving companion. You don't have to go anywhere to drop the dog off. As Floral says you could spray her if she smells a bit but it sounds like she has a fabulous life, much better than many other dogs. Many dogs have lived in smoky homes all their lives. I'd say that you're doing well to juggle all the balls in your life!

Give over, your dog is having a great time...quick wipe down with a damp cloth before he comes in or a roll in a muddy puddle and he will soon smell right
