Itchy dog but no fleas

My King Charles spaniel started to scratch himself a lot, about 2 weeks ago. I assumed it was fleas so got a decent tablet from the vet but he still kept scratching. I've checked for fleas and had him clipped short at the groomers - still no sign of fleas, yet he's still itchy. Does anyone have any experience of this? Could it be an allergy?

Some dogs just have sensitive skin, mine does; but bull terriers are known for it. She develops lumps and rashes that she chews at making it all worse and then it goes away. Impossible to know what's triggered an attack seem to be a bit worse at certain times of the year. There is stuff the vet can give you.

Could be a number of things. 1. food- change to wheat and gluten free diet. 2. does he have a rash. 3. where is he itching the most ie around the under belly near back of legs.
My mums dog was the same. No rash, was on a wheat and gluten free diet because she was sick on any other kibble. But then she started to itch. No fleas, no rash . I did some research on the net and found that some dogs can get systems of hay fever. My mum started giving her hay fever tablets and she is ok now.

There's some kind of parasite which is also treated with vet prescribed anti flea tablets. My dog gets it on his paws.

Thanks for your replies.

Well he seems to be itching under his belly most and then biting at his back legs a bit - but then I suppose he's quite limited as to where he can actually itch without arms hands??. I have bought some aldi dried dog food a week or so ago so I might sling that in case it's that. I could try him with half a piriton for a few days to try to stop the itching. If this fails I'll take him to the vets.

We had a couple of dogs years ago that started itching badly, both times it was food related. Switched to a decent quality, grain & crap free hypoallergenic dog food and it disappeared in a couple of weeks.

Aldi dog food isn't reviewed but gets a shocking 0.5 out of 5 if you put the ingredients into the allaboutdogfood ratings generator.
