Young Collie not growing up??

kippersmum · 04/10/2015 22:34

I rehomed a young collie pup nearly 2 years ago. Was meant to be a working dog but failed everything! :) He is the best family dog we could ask for, but he is 2 tomorrow & still looks & acts like a puppy. Think a pup 9 months old. He has had all his vet checks etc, no health problems, vet said it is because he is the litter runt.

Anyone else have any experience of this? We do advanced level dog training every week etc

Some collies are weeny so I would not be worried about his size. In agility collies are being breed to be small and hence faster.

Collie behaving like a 9 month old puppy not unusual at all - they are quick energetic dogs who love to be busy - just like puppies!

How does he act like a puppy?
What is his weight?

Our pup is 9 months old. She is tiny and weighs about 12.5kg. She is half the size of our eldest who's 5, but I don't think she'll grow any more. She still hasn't had a season that we've known about. We breed dogs to stay as puppylike as possible for as long as possible. Is your dog neutered?

Collies come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Within reason of some sort.

Our collie girl is normal sized but is very much still a puppy at just turned 2 years. I'm kind of expecting her to stay the same until she's at least 10!!

It's a collie thing I think. Mine are crossed with FCR's which are known as the Peter Pan's of the dog world. So they will never grow up which is both great and terrible I think.

Outcomesthebunnyofdeath · 05/10/2015 13:27

Katherine Mine too. I also think she has Springer in her, I mean honestly, you wouldn't choose those three as a mix would you?

Mine is definitely a Peter Pan, I don't want her to ever grow up yet wish every day she would grow up and stop being so bloody excitable about anything and everything. Crazy mutt.

Aye. But I'd like the eat-everything-I-see part of being a youngster to END.

I could only giggle at your title, it a collieGrin

We rescued ours at 7 months, and didn't expect her to grow anymore just to fill out a bit. She's now four and a half and still puppy like in mentality. People often ask if she's an older pub.

I've also made the same mistake asking someone else if there collie was maybe 1 or 2 in age only for the owner to say no he's 14ShockGrin

One of my collies is 11 and still very puppy like in looks and ways.
Don't think he will change now.
