And tell me whether she looks overweight or not?

The lights a bit bad. Can you take one from behind and the side again?

BertrandRussell · 01/10/2015 20:48

I can try. It took me ages to get that one!

Leigh1980 · 01/10/2015 20:50

No she looks normal to me

DartmoorDoughnut · 01/10/2015 20:50

Best way to tell is from above, my BT is slightly overweight, will try and add a photo for comparison for you

2legit2knit · 01/10/2015 20:52

He could have a little more 'tuck' at the waist I think. Have you got a picture from the top? does he have a defined waist from above?

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 01/10/2015 20:52

No, not from that angle anyway. You've got a dip at the hind legs - rather than a barrel belly Smile

DartmoorDoughnut · 01/10/2015 20:53

Taken yesterday, poor bugger is wearing his jumper now, hating his haircut!

'She', sorry Blush

She's very sweet, I love border terriers:)

BertrandRussell · 01/10/2015 20:54

Much hilarity- and not much better!
(The second for cuteness rather than diagnosis!)

I think yes, slightly overweight.

TreeSparrow · 01/10/2015 20:58

Looks a touch overweight to me. Dogs should be lean and fit ideally.

Yours doesn't look awful though. Certainly healthy enough.

tabulahrasa · 01/10/2015 21:01

She doesn't appear to have a waist in those pictures...so yes, but not by a vast amount and obviously photos can be deceptive.

BertrandRussell · 01/10/2015 21:07

I'm asking because according to the Border Terrier breed standard she's between 2 and 3 kilos overweight which has really really shocked me...Sad

OP posts:
tabulahrasa · 01/10/2015 21:12

Breed standard weight doesn't allow for height though...is she breed standard height?

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 01/10/2015 21:19

How easily can you feel her ribs? Isn't that meant to be the best gauge?

BertrandRussell · 01/10/2015 22:06

Yes, I think she is breed standard height. I know she could be thinner- but I am shocked at the thought of her losing two kilos- she'd be really really skinny.

Oh, Lord, i'm one of those in denial parents whose kid has a lunchbox full of Mars bars, aren't I?

OP posts:
Noitsnotteatimeyet · 01/10/2015 22:53

The vast majority of dogs should be skinny - we've just got so used to seeing fat dogs we now think overweight is normal ...

And tbh most breed standards are on the generous side weight-wise.

My dog is v slim but is a perfect weight for his breed and build but I've lost count of the other dog-walkers who tell me he's too thin

It's very easy to reduce a dog's weight - make sure you weigh your dog's food out for the day and then gradually reduce the amount by 10-20g a day

Also make sure your dog has plenty of exercise

BertrandRussell · 01/10/2015 23:12

Dqrtmoordoughnut- what does your dog weigh?

OP posts:
BertrandRussell · 01/10/2015 23:15

Notitsnot- I have been incredibly judgmental about people with overweight dogs- I guess this is my comeuppance!

She quite often has leftover cooked vegetables mixed in with her biscuits- should I up the vegetables as I reduce the biscuits?

OP posts:
Noitsnotteatimeyet · 02/10/2015 08:06

You could but you don't want to alter the balance of her food too much if she's on kibble

The main thing to watch out for is treats - use some of her daily portion of kibble instead. Do you feed her from a bowl? If so, get rid of it and use a slow feeder, treat dispensing ball or Kong instead or chuck her food in the garden chicken-style so she has to sniff it out

RuthSovoie · 02/10/2015 11:28

Oh my Gosh, not overweight of course!

Godstopper · 02/10/2015 19:26

Breed weight for BT's tends to be a little unrealistic for those not showing. Ours is also about 2kg over and looks like this.

Bit of trial and error though: if she has a few treats in the day, she has slightly less food in the evening, and less food on the odd days we don't get out. They tend to gain weight easily, and the fur disguises a pot belly!

BertrandRussell · 02/10/2015 20:01

Gosh- she's much thinner than ours! Blush

What does she weigh, godstopper?

OP posts:
Adarajames · 02/10/2015 20:19

Something like 95% of dogs in UK are overweight, so as pp said, we are too used to larger dogs to recognise a healthy weight one without thinking they're underweight.
Yours could do with losing some. My girl was obese when she came into rescue, and totally hyper being fed on bakers (doggy crack!), switched to raw and she lost it easily and is currently a good weight; her weight creeps up sometimes - we do loads of training with food rewards 4 or so times a week, but just reduce her food for few days and levels off again.
Wish I could lose weight that easily though!

Godstopper · 02/10/2015 23:14

She's about 8kg. I think breed standard I'd about 5-6. Breed standard she is not on account of gangly legs and grumbly temperament. Really do not think your dog is huge! Maybe a kilo or two, nothing reducing biscuits a little bit won't sort.
