How can i stop dog scratching infected area?

He has a very sore infected patch of skin on his shoulder. Just back from vet where he got an antibiotic and the vet washed it with hibiscrub and gave me it home to to twice a day. However the scrub is clearly really hurting him, he is pacing up and down and scratching with his hind leg. Is there anything i can do to stop him getting at it? Would a sock taped onto his foot be useless? I cant see a patch over the sore area working as he is a golden retriever and it would stick to his long hair. He'd just scratch it off anyway.

Any ideas?

Would Sudocrem help? My vet recommends it for most sores and itchiness but my dogs eat it!!

Good idea, i'll try a t-shirt on him. Ive given him his kong with some peanut butter but even thats not distracting him.

We chopped up an old kid's tshirt to make an anti scratch vest for a lab who had wet eczema on her shoulder a while ago. Seemed to help.

Im bumping this because i need suggestions for helping with the pain or itching (not sure which is happening) from when i wash the area with the hibiscrub.

I use the hibiscrub and vet advised to use damp cotton wool to wash suds off but i found that wasnt getting all the soap off so ive taken to using wet rags to get all the soap off. It appears to be working well and i am really thorough. He sits very well during the washing and rinsing but about 5 minutes after i finish he starts pacing and scratching and whining. Its clearly quite sore/itchy. The T-shirt isnt having any effect during this time which goes in for about 15 minutes.

Is there anything i can do/apply after the rinsing to stop this happening?
