Dog / puppy food - completely baffled by the choice

So all being well, we might be getting a new addition to the family later this autumnSmile

We've started to look at the food we will feed long term. The breeder will send us home with a bag of eukanuba puppy which we will continue with. But do we stay with this forever?

I've been looking online and my instincts are telling me to go with one of the high meat content foods like millies wolfheart or akela. How do you know which to go with? The choice these days seems bewildering. Our old dog food very well on bog standard complete food but now this time round I'm feeling far more worried about everything.

Also while in here, does anyone have a child proof, dog proof container for keeping dried food? I found a small curver one which is the ideal size for the kitchen but our 2 year old managed to open it in about 10 seconds flat!

Eukanuba is an expensive but mediocre dog food with maize, wheat, salt etc so personally I would let her settle in first for a week or two then change over slowly.

Look at allaboutdogfood to see each foods ingredients etc.

Ideally you are looking for a grain free food with no nasties in it, the site clearly shows which ingredients to avoid.

Alternatively you could try raw.

We feed our lab Millies Wolfheart, a mixture of 75% Countryside Mix with 25% Salmon & Veg. He does very well on it with a lovely glossy coat, firm stools and no wind.

Forgot to say, Millie's is suitable for puppies too. As its a high quality food its got everything a puppy needs, so they don't have to make a special puppy version.

We feed our cockapoo Millie's Wolfheart and he loves it ! It stopped his smelly wind and gives firm poo. Personally I find it not too expensive and they have great customer service. Good luck with your pup.

We feed our two labs Akela and really pleased with it.

Our older bitch, aged 4 has been on it since June and our younger puppy, nearly 14 weeks has been slowly transferred to it.

Smaller well formed poops, super shiny glossy coats and I swear our older girl seems to have changed shape- she seems to have better muscle definition and less fat- not that she was fat in the first place mind you.

I would recommend it.

We have recently switched our dog to millies wolfheart and the difference has been amazing. No more being gassed out of the room in the evening and the poop is much smaller. We have tried many different foods in the past (including burns, wainwrights, skinners, autarky and markhus mule) and this is the first that has really agreed with him. I know others who have done perfectly well on the other brands I've mentioned so I'm not criticising them, just saying what's worked for our dog (large lab cross) Smile
