If you don't have a pedigree where did you get your dog?

After losing our old dog we're beginning to consider whether (according to my husband) or when (according to me) we will get another dog. We'd both prefer a crossbreed, a young dog but not necessarily a puppy. Ideally, we'd love a rescue, like our old boy, but this doesn't look likely as the rescues near us have no suitable dogs or won't re home with children and the rescues that do have dogs are at the other end of the country. So.....where do we look? Not keen on things like Pets4Homes etc. I'd love to hear where you got your dog in case there's an avenue I'm missing.

Both my lurchers came from EGLR - one was born with them, one came in as a 6 month old.

EGLR will rehome to people with small children, and foster all their dogs so they know them really well. They have an extensive homecheck network, so distance isn't an issue. If you follow them on FB, you get to see all the dogs as they come in

My dog is a failed guide dog. The fact he's a crossbreed isn't immediately apparent though, he mostly looks like a lab. But he's wonderful and we'll definitely go through guide dogs again if we get a new dog.

Floralnomad · 14/09/2015 08:05

I would be wary of any dog from a council pound if I had small children . We got our patterdale x from Battersea , he was about 15 weeks , we just happened to be in the right place on the right day .

JohnCusacksWife · 14/09/2015 09:23

Thanks all. We have a guinea pig (and also live in area with a lot of livestock) so had kind of ruled out lurchers/greyhounds.

Unless your guinea pig is free ranging, then it would be fine unless the dog had a very high prey drive (which can be assessed) - mine ignored a rabbit in a hutch completely.

No dog would be livestock safe innately, but you can do courses to train them to ignore sheep. DDog1 is scared of them, ddog2 is more interested, but I'd never let a dog off lead in a field of livestock anyway. They are unworried by horses/cows though.

A friend on facebook who put up a picture. They had a beagle that wasn't working for their family situation right at a time when we had started to visit pounds etc. It all worked out really well because we were able to get the lowdown on our hound, but I appreciate it is a pretty unique setup.

dotdotdotmustdash · 18/09/2015 16:12

One from a rescue in South Wales (Friends of the Animals RCT, they rehome all over the country and are open to all enquiries) and the other from a Gumtree 'free to a good home' ad. I don't usually recommend this as a good method, but she was a young collie and I didn't want her to go to an inadequate home and we already had a collie. She's an absolute star, as is our older boy.

PacificDogwod · 18/09/2015 17:19

John, we have 2 indoor guinea pigs and a young greyhound with a high prey drive who can get stupidly excited - it works by keeping them strictly separate (baby gates, closed doors, high-level dead bolt). It has meant that the GPs are more isolated and get played with less. Which may actually have been coming as a relief to them, I dunno...

lougle · 18/09/2015 17:45

Black Retriever X rescue here. They transported him all the way from Ireland and we met them around 70 miles away from home.

He's fluffy though!

If you don't have a pedigree where did you get your dog?
lougle · 18/09/2015 17:46

Photos come out sideways no matter what I do!

Bubble2bubble · 18/09/2015 20:42

How's he doing lougle? He looks gorgeous as ever :)

lougle · 18/09/2015 23:58

I must! Blush post you the harness. Hugest apologies! Life has been a bit crazy of late.

He is just wonderful. We've discovered that not only is he great with dogs, children and cats, but he is also absolutely great with free roaming chickens. So we can let them have a wander while we feed/water them.

He's such a treasure. He'd still rather bomb after other dogs than return to us, but we work on it. He's also got a great friend in Abby, the little GSDX that Mum and Dad took from BRX -we take him down there regularly and they play beautifully.

Local animal warden and the dog before her from wood green animal shelter

Bubble2bubble · 19/09/2015 08:27

Delighted to hear it :) he is just an all round fabulous boy!

lougle · 19/09/2015 08:55

Mrsjayy · 19/09/2015 09:15

Your dog is lovely love him just chillin.op Our first dog was from the pound he was a lovely dog he was elderly though we only had him over a year but he was the nicest dog we have had dont rule it out

BagelwithButter · 19/09/2015 11:07

Medium sized, slim, smooth coated, floppy eared dogs! Not keen on v small dogs or fluffy coats. Not big into breeds of any kind - just prefer Heinz 57s (which, I'm discovering are thin on the ground!)

I absolutely know which dog fits your criteria!! She's a gorgeous girl looking for a home. Here she is: MOLI

I follow Balkan Underdogs on Facebook and her rescuer says that Moli is the sweetest thing, loves cuddles, just can be a little reserved with other dogs, loves humans more!

If you don't have a pedigree where did you get your dog?
JohnCusacksWife · 21/09/2015 09:28

Bagel, she's just lovely. Just the kind of dog I like! We've decided to go away on holiday during the October week so our search is on hold til we get back but I'll definitely "bookmark" her and check again in a few weeks. Although she's so pretty I'm sure she'll be snapped up. Thanks x

BagelwithButter · 22/09/2015 10:30

Ooh good!

Have a lovely holiday - hope she is there when you get back. She has been overlooked for more obviously "cute" dogs, I think, but sounds absolutely lovely.

You could express an interest now anyway, a homecheck would have to be organised and travel from where she is, which would take a few weeks. They will work around your holiday dates. You can also offer to foster "with a view to adopt", I've seen lots of people do this.

It's a good rescue, lots of help, also an "Adopted" FB group which is fun if you like that sort of thing and backup if you need it. Fingers crossed Smile

slipperyeel · 22/09/2015 14:36

We have a Balkan underdog! With floppy ears and he is brilliant, wonderful with kids

BagelwithButter · 22/09/2015 16:46

Small world slippery! Have you had him/her long? I know you may not want to out yourself by putting a picture Grin

If JCsWife wants to look into it further, hopefully you'll vouch for them as a good rescue!

JoffreyBaratheon · 22/09/2015 19:42

Dogs Trust. We got our's as a puppy and they can put you on the puppy list - you just keep ringing and nagging them, then, til a litter come in. So rescues do get pups and quite often, from what I hear. In the weeks after we got our pup they had some lack lab pups come in, and some GSD crosses. Amongst others.

She is a staffty/JRT cross. I have had staffies/bull terriers all my life. But never a JRT. We have rabbits but despite her JRT-ness, she is fine with them.

knackered69 · 22/09/2015 22:22

Has anyone a clue what my dog is? (apart from a heinz!)

She is 9 and has been with us for a month now - we love her to bits - she is perfect for us!

knackered69 · 22/09/2015 22:29

And she isn't allowed on the sofa.

If you don't have a pedigree where did you get your dog?
2legit2knit · 22/09/2015 22:46

Gsd x staffie with a bit of mutt thrown in I reckon knackered.
