I breeds full pedigree dogs earlier this year, know problems accured and we had a small litter of 3. 2 pups went to fantastic homes and we decided to keep the 3rd. Dam started to get less caring and becoming a little aggressive with pup who is now 6 months so I made a tough decision to try do my best and find her a better home. Put things in place and so on. I find her a home the man was wanting a pup so told him about my pup.. I introduced and vetted owner and also reduced price with pup being older. Now pup has been in new home 2 weeks and they want to return it. Advice needed please

Take it back...if you're not prepared to take them back you've no business ever breeding dogs.

I've said I would take it back they then make excuses

If you can't take the puppy back right now can you ask the stud dog owner?

Or, is there anyone else you know who would be a suitable owner that you can introduce to the current owners (so they buy the puppy from them)?

The last alternative would be to take the puppy back with a nominal payment and then give them the balance once you're able to rehome her.

Alternatively beg or borrow the money from anyone you can so you can get her home and reassess her before you find her forever home.

I'm a breeder and in your shoes I would visit the new family today or tomorrow and judge the situation myself. I would intend to take the puppy home with me from that visit.

I offer a refund of the full purchase price to any of my owners if they need to return a pup for any reason, regardless of how long they've had it. Can you offer that? It might make their decision easier? I'd do anything to encourage owners to hand back a dog they were making a balls up of. Anything at all!

I've explained I will take her back but refund will not be given till I can rehome puppy. It's so not fair and I feel terrible for the poor dog

daisy is what I would expect from a reputable breeder. A visit to the family and find out if your pup is ok, discuss what the issues are and if they are fixable with your support.

If the new family are not suitable owners, come to an agreement to take the pup back. Can someone else in your family or the stud dog owners help out with your responsibilities to this pup while you are on sick leave?

Mommagonnaknockyouout · 11/09/2015 18:42

The new owner is messing me around for the sake of it and its quite draining. I sent message saying I would be fine taking pup back which I didn't think she was expecting. I then stated that a full refund would be given once I had resold pup.. Of course then she's gave me the yes no maybe game so I have seeked advice with cab who told me it seems she's giving me the run around and I'm in my right to refuse pup back as I have evidence that all had been explained to new owner

But why would you refuse to take the pup back? Surely as a breeder you are only interested in the best possible life for the puppy, so whether they're messing you about or not is irrelevant.

A house visit is the only possible solution to this. Then you can establish what the problem really is and what you can do to resolve it. I would absolutely take the purchase price with me, in cash. Waving a bundle of cash about will quickly change the mind of a chancer and get the puppy somewhere safe. I don't think you would be reasonable to take the puppy and promise money on the condition you can sell it on. That is not fair at all.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 11/09/2015 19:47

You should take the pup back and refund immediately. There is no reason to wait until you resell the pup. You will not be out of pocket, as you will just be giving back the money you got for the pup

Be more thorough in your vetting next time.

WeAllHaveWings · 11/09/2015 23:00

If she is saying yes/no/maybe because of money you need to give the full refund and get your pup out of there.

If it's because she's not sure if she wants to keep the pup you need to visit and assess the situation and provide support.

If you want to be a reputable breeder (tbh you are beginning to sound a bit like a backyard breeder) like daisy these are the responsibilities you take on when you breed pups. You need to be more assertive with the owner, phone them (not message) and actually discuss the situation.

WeAllHaveWings · 11/09/2015 23:03

Oh and of course the cab is right, you legally don't have to take the pup back or refund. But a reputable breeder would not think twice about taking their pups back to ensure they were rehomed safely.
