Anyone not have a bed for their dog?

DH and I are disagreeing at the moment. We have a golden retriever and quite a small house. As he's pretty big, he has a pretty big bed. The only place for it to go is in front of the TV. DH wants to get rid of the bed and I want to keep it but to be fair I'm struggling to say why.

He very rarely goes into it. In the evening, the cat gets to it first and stretches out. DDog is usually on the couch or the floor. When we're in bed he's usually either on the bed, the couch or the floor. He will go into his bed if he can get to it before the cat but then the car whacks him a few times and he gets out so the cat can have it.

He goes into his bed to get his treat if we're going out but by the time we're out the door he's on the couch. When we come back he's on our bed or the floor.

Anyone not have a bed for their dog?

No beds for my two, both like to stretch out on the rug or curled up on the chair together.

We bought them beds town's ago, £45 each never used, gave them to the rescue centre we go our cat from

I have beds for our dogs as I try to discourage them getting up on furniture as much as poss, but it does seem like a bit of a waste of space if only the cat is using it. That made me laugh, poor wee doggy getting bullied out of bed. I would say get something else for cat to lie in so doggy can keep his bed but there's absolutely no point as cats will just go wherever they want!

We've given up on dog beds in the living room since we replaced our old three seater sofa with two new ones. As there's only me and DH there's a whole spare sofa (plus the extra space on the one we sit on) so it seemed pretty pointless having a dog bed as well. The dogs aren't missing them at all.

The only place we have a dog bed now is in the kitchen so they have somewhere specific to go sit whilst we're cooking.

I didn't have a dog bed for my old dog as he never used it when he did have one. Current dog uses her bed when we're out at work.

Cloudcuckoo50 · 31/08/2015 14:52

I have three beds for my dog - lounge, kitchen and study. But then they are only small beds for a little dog and she's not allowed on the sofas. Your cat sounds like a bully!

Varya · 31/08/2015 14:56

Two beds in kitchen, rug 'nest' in sitting room and another dog bed upstairs.
For two dogs!

moosemama · 31/08/2015 14:59

I don't have a dog bed in the living room, but we have one under the table and one in the corner in the kitchen. The corner bed is enormous, as I have two large dogs and to be honest it does take up too much space, but they both love lounging on it all day (lazy Lurchers) and are not allowed on the furniture, so it has to stay. They like to sleep separately at night, hence the second bed under the table.

The cat is a brat. DDog is at least 3 times his size but he's just bullied by the cat. Even if we take the cat out of the bed, poor dog won't go in again, he's too worried about annoying the cat.

It's possibly payback though. We had a bed for the cat (that he never went in) and then we got Bailey who used to go in the cats bed.

My DB has 3 dogs, all much smaller than yours, but they don't have any beds. They are allowed on sofas, one particularly likes lying along the back of it and looking out of the window. Otherwise, they're on rugs on the floor.

Smallest is also allowed on their bed at night (although my brother would prefer not!) but they seem quite happy without their own beds.

cosytoaster · 31/08/2015 16:42

I don't - dog sleeps on sofa or on the floor in front of the fire downstairs and my bed upstairs. He used to have a bed that he never used.

CarriesBucketOfBlood · 31/08/2015 16:45

We don't have a bed but have a large fluffy mat that we roll up and stick in the cupboard when we have people around/ hoover/ it gets annoying. Could be a good compromise?

TheMotherOfHellbeasts · 31/08/2015 18:51

We don't have dog beds but the three hellbeasts have a king size mattress on the floor at the end of our bed for them to sleep on. It's amazing how small huge dogs can curl up to be!

Helgathehairy · 31/08/2015 22:28

I like the fluffy mat idea!

We have two dogs and no dog bed. We used to have dog beds but they never used them - our bed is obviously more comfortable!

MaitlandGirl · 01/09/2015 02:42

We have crates for our dogs with single duvets and towels in but no actual dog beds.

The puppy likes to lie on a bath mat in the lounge and our other papillon is on the sofa.

The only place we've got dog beds is in the boot of our 4wd so they're a bit more comfortable on long journeys.

Adarajames · 01/09/2015 04:33

Mine have beds all over the house. Not allowed on furniture so are 2 beds in lounge (used to be 3 but lost my old girl recently Sad), a multi-storey bed in hall which is where usually left when I'm out and a couple of mats on kitchen and studio floors and dogs are trained to go sit in them when told so aren't under foot. I also crate when have new or young fosters so even more beds then!

StillRaving · 03/09/2015 18:52

I sleep with the dog and kiss him.

StillRaving · 03/09/2015 18:53

Sorry, Ds got my phone.

TheMotherOfHellbeasts · 03/09/2015 19:02

Yeah right stillraving handy excuse Wink

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 03/09/2015 19:03

Mine has two, but he rarely sleeps in either of them.

I don't let mine on the sofas, so they have big comfy beds. They also tend to run around hysterically a lot so "get on yer bed" gets shouted a lot in my house (weimaraners).

orlakielyimnot · 08/09/2015 20:54

We bought beds when we got them. They dogs were unsettled at night and had to be kept in the kitchen as we couldn't sleep with all their wriggling and checking in on us (cold noses on faces!). Since they settled they've slept with us. The beds are still in their old positions and are used now and then during the day, especailly if we're in the kitchen ourselves, but if I had the space you described I would probably get rid of the beds. Do you have an attic where you could store it for a while and see how you get on?

EasyToEatTiger · 08/09/2015 22:44

Our dogs sleep on whatever sofa or chair or bed they like. They do have beds of their own of one sort or another (we have a lot of really crap old duvets), so no, we don't really have dog beds as such.

JustBeingJuliet · 09/09/2015 08:06

Until recently, I only had one in the kitchen, as ddog liked to lay on the rug in the living room, but she has a bit of an incontinence problem and I realised the rug was starting to stink, despite shampooing it, so the rug has now gone and been replaced with a large crate mat type bed with a waterproof cover. She seems happy and my house no longer smells, as all the floors are wood or laminate so no problem to follow her around with a mop!
