Dog gets separation anxiety with other people

Hey I was wondering if I could ask for some advice.

We don't leave our dog alone very often and when we do max time was 5 hours. We asked our neighbour if he was barking or howling and he said he didn't hear a thing.

Now once we had to leave him for about 10 hours so we left him with my sister at her house (He knows her and has been there loads and always seemed fine, but one of us was always there) So when we left apparently he howled and barked the whole time we were gone. We didn't leave him overnight, he got 4 walks, treats and food. He was putting his paws up on the window sill looking outside.

The crazy thing is that in the end she had enough and dropped him back at our house and left him. He just went to sleep, our neighbour didn't hear a peep out of him. On the very occasional time in future we have to leave him for 8-10 hours do we just go against every dog rule and leave him on his own in our house rather than arrange a sitter.

Can you not have a sitter in your own house? Some dogs find being in a different house without their humans very stressful- we had my sister's dog to stay for a few days and even though she knows us all very well and gets on beautifully with our dog she was still extremely anxious for the first couple of days

That's a good idea basil! Thank you! Maybe we can 'test' leave him for the day with someone in our house and not go too far so if he kicks off again we can get home quickly (and not subject the poor person and neighbours to a day of howling and barking!)

It's worth a try - sometimes giving a dog too many changes to cope with at once, especially if they're already a bit prone to anxiety, can be a bit much for them

We have the same situation with family and friends looking after him for a day. We left the dog at a petsitter for a couple of weeks. He continued to be distressed the whole time, she knew what he could be like but she thought she could cope....she dropped him off a day early and talked about him like he was the devil!
