kennel cough immunisation (for pup) ... did you bother?

Hi everyone. I am undecided on just how necessary this is. I believe it's given in the form of a nasal spray. I have no intention of putting him in kennels (like most pups, he has separation anxiety and I'm not going away anywhere) and although we meet other dogs and their owners at the park, I wouldn't say we're ever in the company of a great many dogs. Vet said it was up to me. Receptionist said the same but hinted that as there are so many strains of kennel cough, it may not protect against everything anyway. Did you get this done for your pup (and would it affect insurance not to)? Many thanks.

we get our two immunised as they do go into kennels on occasion, they barely flinch at the squirt up the nose.

although you dont intend on putting pup into kennels, surprises do pop up and some kennels may be v strict on not taking your dog if it's not been immunised (even in an emergency!).

not sure about insurance, but i bet they ask and it would definitely be an issue if he did get kc and needed treatment

Thanks Shell. Do you know if it's a one-off or annual immunisation?

you're welcome

it's annual

We had our pup done last year as we didn't think much about if it was really needed or not (thankfully it was done as we had a close family bereavement and he needed to go into kennels for a few days at short notice).

This year we didn't because it is for one strain only and needed annually. He also plays with a lot of dogs, but I think the risk is low.

It would leave us stuck in another emergency.

Our vets heavily push to vaccinate for KC.
We did last year, the dogs got a strain of kennel cough that they weren't vaccinated against.
We haven't bothered this year.

KC has nothing to do with going into kennels ,they catch it anywhere and everywhere . My pup came from Battersea on antibiotics for an extremely bad attack of KC , it has left him with tracheal problems . He is 5 now and has had KC at least another 4 times ,mainly very mild attacks not requiring anything other than Tixylix ( which he loves) . I have him regularly immunised and IMO it may not cover all the strains but at least might lessen the severity of the attack . Whilst not life threatening KC is a horrible illness and extremely distressing .

Are you going to go to training classes? If so I would seriously consider it as it quite often runs round training classes in the autumn and you should not socialise with other dogs while your dog is still coughing which can be up to 6 weeks. Losing 6 weeks from puppy training is a big gap.
