Best dog walking coat....?

Can you recommend me a (properly) waterproof coat - I think I need to invest in something warm and waterproof for the winter - my Driazabone and my Barbour both need reproofing as they leak, but the former is really a riding coat and doesn't have a hood, and my other one is a bit too short.

This 'summer' rain has made me think that I really need something more robust/practical for the autumn/winter.

I've got a long Ryedale with a cotton lining and a sort of cape-thing over the shoulders. It wasn't expensive, it's long and it keeps out but the heaviest and most relentless rain. I bought a size up so when it's cold I can shove an extra-thick jumper on underneath. And it has a hood, and it's not heavy (I had a Drizabone and found it weighed a ton).

I'll keep an eye on this thread, since one of the dogs ripped a hole in my Ryedale (now patched with the same stuff you use on tents) and I'll be replacing it at some point - I want to see if there's anything better out there.

It's like this - I see now that's a riding coat. Thinking about it, the times I have got wet in it have been the times when the rain has wicked up my sleeves and up my trousers and I don't think the waterproofness of the coat was the issue.

That looks great, thank you. My Drizabone does weigh a ton, yes, so it would be good to have something lighterweight (and the price is very good too!).

I have a musto short riding coat that is fabulously waterproof - but for this winter, I am planning on buying their long version so it can do double purpose for me - around the yard (I hate riding in a long coat) and dog walking. If they have the technology to keep sailors dry, they must be good!

Ps - I have had a merrill coat that has been fab, but towards the end of this last winter, it lost its ability to keep heavy rain out and I was getting decidedly damp

My aunt loves her Drizabone. She lives in the north of Scotland where they tolerale double and triple rain. I used to wear fishermans waterproofs which did the job. At the moment I have crap coats for keeping out the rain. Waxed coats are very good if you want to keep dry.

I'd recommend taking a look at Land's End - I have their Squall coat (which comes in different lengths) and it seems to be able to withstand the worst that Wales can throw at it (and we are very good at rain here). Smile

It's also washable and hard wearing - it's about 8 or 9 years old now and seems indestructible.
