Am I being stupidly stubborn?

All my life I have been in love with one breed of dog, my parents got our 1st one when I was 7 and then had 2 more, the last one died when I was in my 30's. Since living on my own I always knew that one day I would have one of my own and now at last all the stars have aligned and we are in a position to get a dog.
Problem is DH doesn't want this breed! He says they are too large and hairy and will only agree to a smaller dog. He also doesn't agree with paying for a pedigree dog when we could look for a rescue puppy. He had Jack Russell cross as a child and wants something that size. We used to have my mums dog to stay sometimes so he does know how large and hairy the dog I want is so he's not just being awkward. We do have the space for a large dog.
I keep thinking that breed doesn't matter so I look for rescue puppies or other smaller breeds and just when I find one I see my preferred breed again and it all goes out of the window. For example we met someone on holiday with a Pom, really liked it and researched the breed and thought it might be an option. On our 1st day home I met someone walking my preferred breed and that was it, I no longer want a Pom.
Am I just being silly? Would I be able to love any dog that was part of our family? Dd just wants a dog of any kind and ds doesn't care so it's just me.
Would any dog we got just not be a X or would I just forget the whole breed thing ? We dog sit a couple of dogs ( not my preferred breed) and although they are great I do think that they aren't an X
I think part of my obsession ( if it's that) is that between the ages of about 10 and 20 my home life was very hard And our dog was a real comfort to me, if I was crying in my room he would come and find me and sit with (on) me until I felt better.
Anyone else in love with one breed but tried another and it worked? Or should I keep trying to persuade DH?

if it was a GSD I'd insist you got one. But Gret... meh!

But you can get a dainty one I suppose.

If it's shedding and hair getting on the floor/furniture a Jack Russell will be just as bad IME. Little white hairs everywhere. I think if you're getting a dog hair is just part of the package x)

There is a cockapoo currently asleep on my feet, we luffs him and all but he's not my GR!!!
DH thinks he's about the right size and shedding ness

6 weeks ago, I got a Golden Retriever puppy. One week in, I wanted to return her to the breeder as it was a total shock having a puppy. Have had rescue dogs aged 3+ in the past (and like you, a beautiful Golden as a young child who I NEVER forgot!) but wasn't prepared for the bouncy, full on energy of this pup.

Now, she's 14 weeks. Had all her immunisations and we go our for 3 ten minute walks a day (starting slowly). WE CAN GET NO MORE THAN A MINUTE DIWN THE ROAD AND WE ARE STOPPED....SHE IS A TOTAL BEAUTY! Everyone wants to touch her, look at her, speak to her and she LOVES it. She sits down quietly and let's them adore her! Yes, she's hairy....she comes in from the garden having rolled in slugs, she woofs at 6am, she will eat everything within her reach and we have stair gates everywhere. I am soooo glad we have her.

Oh Eliza, that's such a lovely update :) have your ds and the cat come round too?

Eliza22 · 22/08/2015 15:18

Yes, DS adores her (and occasionally plays with her). If they're in the car, he sits on the back seat and she rests her chin and paws on him Smile.

The cat remains at a distance but is well fed and we take every opportunity it's to give her lovin'!

I have always had a goldie and a black lab. When my last goodie went, I swore blind I would have no more - the hair is okay until they are wet and muddy and then the sweet smell of dog lingers.

I cracked.

But only half cracked! My latest is a first cross. Her mam is a lab, her dad a retriever. They are being bred as assistance dogs, so you get the goldie traits, but not necessarily the hair. She is virtually white in colour, with golden stripes Smile Her hair is longer than a lab, but much shorter than a goldie. But, she does shed.

She is also rather too clever for her own good and runs rings around a very befuddled male black labGrin

eliza I was following your thread and trying desperately not to post offering to take her off your hands!!!
Glad it worked out for you - she will be amazing with your DS, might sound silly but they are very empathetic ( sure other dogs are too)
