Puppy diarrhoea & smelly wind!

Hi there

My puppy is almost 7 months old now and for last couple of months has had loose stools on and off and his flatulence is quite unpleasant too! He's been to the vets and tests have been done which ruled out any nasties.

Got him off the rice and chicken last week and back to loose stools again. I'm thinking it must be his food which is a good quality high protein dry food called Canagan. I'm wondering whether it's just too rich for him and doing research on the internet, it's suggested that high protein diets can be too much for some dogs and perhaps this is the case for him.

I was wondering whether anyone has any alternative suggestions for dry food that might solve this problem. I have also ordered a doggie probiotic which I hope will also help.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Have you tried just feeding him less? Over feeding especially with good quality food can cause those type of problems.

what breed is he ? - some breeds have intolerances/sensitivity to certain foods.

I second the feeding less. Ours have 3 small feeds a day. Seems to help their bowels. We stopped canagan though can't remember why. Had success with orijen though that was overpriced and currently loving Millie's wolfheart. Fish seems to work better too

He's a schnoodle - schnauzer/poodle X.

I'm not sure how much I should feed him now. According to Canagan, it's between 180 and 255g per day depending on expected adult weight. I was going somewhere between the two but nearer the top end once you include treats etc. He weights around 10kg now.

I think I'll try feeding him less and perhaps more often and see if that works. Think I might also try Millie's Wolfheart too as it seems to be very popular, only thing that stopped me was it was high protein again, but if that's not an issue...

Thing is though, he always seems hungry so I thought I wasn't feeding him enough!

Lots of dogs say they're always hungry, even ones built like barrels, lol.

I've never come across manufacturer's guidelines that aren't too high yet - my dog gets half what the packet says he should.

I'd drop it to the 180 for a few days and see if his symptoms stop or at least ease a bit and then you know whether it's an amount issue rather than ingredients.

NatFrenchie · 19/08/2015 13:17

OK will do that. I was feeding him twice a day before he had his latest bout of loose stools but while he was having chicken and rice upped it to three times, should I now go back to twice a day or stick to three times.

Sorry for my ignorance, he's my first dog! Confused

My boy's only 4 months but has had the same. I managed to improve it a lot by swapping one of his 4 meals to scrambled egg, and another meal was switched to a raw chicken wing, and the other two were half a small can of Chappie. I also gave him a bit of zoolac for a couple of days - it's a probiotic like pro-kolin but he seems to like it a lot more than he did the pro-kolin.

I think the egg, and the bones in the chicken helped to firm him up, and also meant I was cutting down what he was eating. Plus the Chappie is very simple, basic fare.

I'm now introducing him to James Wellbeloved fish-based puppy food in the aim of getting him back on dry food and on something with a bit more goodness than good ol' Chappie. The key here, I think, is to engineer any changes of diet nice and slowly once you've got him more solid.

I'd stick to whatever you've been doing, but less food...purely because it'll either show that that's the problem or rule it out fairly quickly.

If it makes no difference, then I'd start looking at other foods.

My dogs didn't do well on high protein diets. Burns food gives them nice manageable poos, unless they snaffle something on a walk.
