Puppy biting continually

DDog is now 11 weeks old and getting very big. I am really struggling though with how to deal with his mouthing and biting.
If he hasn't seen us for a while (eg he's been asleep) he gets very excited. In the mornings I can't walk around the kitchen to get his food without him biting at my legs. When I put my hands down he bites at those too. He's worse with the children - barking and jumping. I've taught them to ignore and stand still but it has no effect.
I've stopped play if he gets too boisterous. We pick him up and place him outside when he barks at the children (and cats!). This morning I've tried using treats to reinforce good behaviour - seemed to work but early stages.
When he is calm he is lovely, cuddly and very affectionate, but he's too big to be biting and jumping up.
Any advice will be welcomed!

I think I prefer yours Joffrey - at least he is asleep Smile.

Another pair of trousers ripped today, but on the plus side I have been able to get him to walk up and down on the lead in the garden rather than rolling himself up with the lead in his mouth.
We've also booked him into some puppy socialisation classes at a local vet from next week.
Tried the frozen stuffed kong thing as well but he just got frustrated and barked at it Confused.

Perhaps give him a few Kongs stuffed with easier fillings into he gets the hang of it. If you're replacing his meals with Kongs he'll work much harder to get the food out ;)

*until he gets the hang of it

Awwwww, Elliptic5, I could eat him. (And Joffreydog too.)

My golden retriever was a terrible biter. All clothing shredded. All washing stolen from line. Nipped ankles, wrists... it was never done angrily, just enthusiastically.

We tried flippin' everything. Everything! Those puppy training videos are useless. They are always training an already-trained chihuahua, not a big, hefty retriever. Turning back was the most useless advice - he'd just bite the back of your legs. Offering a toy - he laughed and ignored it. Barking - he'd bark back louder.

I think you have to accept that some dogs bite and some don't. Mine grew out of it after about six months. But it wasn't nice while it lasted!

Crate train all the way. Everybody needs time out at some point. Yelping and treats didn't work but a firm no and placing her somewhere else or if she continued it was time for 'time out'. Now she's the perfect dog absolutely no mouthing ever and is my son's best buddy. X
