Can you help, whippet or border terrier?

We seem to have narrowed out choices for a pup down to two breeds. Border terrier or a whippet. We are sort of stuck now which to go for. We are new to dog owning. Have two children at home (youngest 10 but is v sensitive and so something quite gentle but is ok with children would be good). Easyish to train. Will be able to walk for 1 hour a day. We have a medium sized enclosed garden. Prefer not too barky.
Any advice please?

Border terrier! We have one, and he is fabulous - friendly, affectionate, great fun, and really very low maintenance. He has a huge personality, and while he isn't the best-trained dog in the world (our fault...), he's generally very good.
He rarely barks - only to be let in or out really.
We have a 10 year old son, who was 5 when we first got the dog, and they're the best of friends!

A vote for the whippet here! Ours is a ten week old puppy but already such a delightful boy. The best decision we've ever made and he ticks all the boxes on your list. Especially good with children!

Fabulous breed, I've got three

I don't have children but they're fabulous with my 8 year old niece, so gentle and loving.

They're generally very quiet. I've got one that will alert bark and occasionally bark in play but for the most part they're almost silent although they have a spectacular array of whines and whinges

Mine were only out for 45 minutes today as our local field has been cut for hay and the short grass sent them doolally playing chase. They've been asleep pretty much ever since, though one has dragged himself from the sofa to the door as he can hear OH starting dinner.....

I find them incredibly relaxing dogs, there's something very soothing about having snoozing whippets draped artfully around a room.

I have a BT but pick up my new whippet puppy in two weeks! Sorry absolutely no help, but they are both gorgeous breeds

My DM has a border. Delightful with people but not always great with other dogs. Wilful! Loving!

We have a 10 month old whippet and he is a brilliant dog, we have two DD's under 5 and he has fitted into our family brilliantly, I love all the extra cuddles I get with him too, be prepared for your sofa usage to go up!!!

Border terrier. They often win "best family dog" type titles.

Also with a whippet Id be worried i wouldn't be able to let it off the lead ever. You may be lucky and get one with fairly good recall but it's often recommended they stay on the lead.

And also I think whippets can be prone to tooth problems, as in decay.

My greyhound needed a yearly dental and insurance doesn't cover it. Used to cost me £400 a year.

We had a border terrier when first married, and my daughter now has a whippet which spends much of its time with us, so feel I can give totally balanced advice.

They are both lovely dogs, with wonderful temperaments. The border is more robust and I think will love being with children. Ours used to go ratting with dh and they really worked as a team, yet could happily slob out on the sofa. The whippet is a very easy dog - a mad run and he slobs out for the rest of the day. He's also been easy to train, but is a bit of a killing machine, any little fluffy creature is not safe during his mad run, and as we are on a farm there are lts of those about. We are plagued with rabbits so I kind of have to accept his culling of those, but I dread walking past the ponds with ducklings and goslings which he is also partial to.

On balance I'd go for a border as I think they are a more all round family dog (and don't take up so much room on the sofa).

My parents border terrier is very barky as is my aunties and my neighbours. Not sure I've ever met a quiet one! So if that's important then have a good think

Can I be annoying and say neither? There are a lot of border terriers and whippets around here (one of our dog's best friends is 7/8 whippet) and I wouldn't have either of them with small children.

Massive generalisation but the whippets we know are not terribly bright - mostly sweet-natured - and not that easy to train. Recall, especially in the vicinity of small furries, is questionable. That's not to say you can't train whippets but they're harder work than the average gun dog.

We have a bit of a problem with border terriers - the ones we often see are very barky and rush up to our dog and jump up around his face which he hates. He's had to resort to telling some of them off to get them to back off, which considering he is the biggest non-confrontational dog in the world means they must be really annoying...

Have you had a look at miniature poodles? They are lovely dogs, bright, active, easy to train but happy to chill with their families- and they don't have to have silly haircuts

Our border has got noisier as he's got older. He's great with kids. Massive personality but I'd say he's quite demanding. Love him to bits but he always wants something. Sometimes he'll just whine at me cos he wants to sit on sofa where I am!

He's tricky with some other breeds.

Oh and was manic until about 6 yrs old then calmed down slightly.

Don't want to persuade you either way as I'm sure you'll love whichever pup you go for and they all have their personalities. My border is definitely the opposite to chilled out though! On the upside he's funny and loving and v cute so I forgive him his stroppy tendencies :)

A small whippet cross type lurcher - there will be plenty in the specialist sighthound rescues, even as small puppies born in rescue.

My whippet cross lurcher is gorgeous, fab with children and recalls beautifully. Like all dogs, he just needs training and reinforcement on it.

Our border is a lovely dog. Great fun, almost too loving (dd cam back from university earlier in the week and has had to hide in her room sometimes because the dog's ecstacy is too much for her!) happy to walk miles or not, practically never barks, mucks in with whatever we're doing, Just lovely. Downsides- they are hard to train, they need to be hand stripped which costs a fortune, and they put on weight easily. Go for a border!

I foster for a couple of whippet/lurcher rescue charities.

We currently have a few lurcher pups that are desperate for homes. And a BEAUTIFUL young lurcher boy that I can't believe hasn't got a home yet

Thank you everyone your input is very helpful. Monkey, those whippys look gorgeous. I am not in a position to have a dog right now, builders are in and so would be unfair on the dog. Should be all done by mid August so will be free to have a dog to love then :)
