Protective coat for a whippet?

My whippet loves to hare around with a variety of dogs and last week he managed to get a nasty skin tear. My vet tells me it's quite common and I suppose we have been lucky that it hasn't happened before.
We don't want to stop him running around with other dogs - that is the thing he lives for! But we need some kind of lightweight protective coat for the summer to help avoid him getting injured. I have googled and there seems to be a need but no solution.

If you have a pointy how do you protect their paper thin skin from a tear during horse play?

Theres a few options - the simplest is a walking out coat which is cotton, or a raincoat which is a bit tougher. My very thin skinned lurcher sometimes wears his in the woods when he has a tendency to catch himself, and hasn't torn it yet.

My younger Lurcher has very thin skin and is notorious for ripping/tearing it at regular intervals. He's embarrassingly famous at our vets for it. Blush

He has a warm, fleece-lined winter coat for when it's cold and a raincoat like the one CMOT linked to for summer. You can also buy cooling, towelling summer coats which might be an option for high summer.

You could go for a coat in the winter, even if it is just a lightweight waterproof coat if he doesn't feel the cold or if he does get cold, get something with a fleece or warm lining. Then for the summer, how about a cooling coat like this www.dfordog.co.uk/thermlow-dog-cooling-vest.html

You could even try a Medical Pet Shirt for torso protection www.dfordog.co.uk/medical-pet-shirts.html but note that the poppers at the rear have to be unfastened for him to toilet Smile

Thank you, ddogs tear was in the care of a pet sitter and she was quite upset and traumatised by the state ddog got himself into, he's pretty fearless for a whippet - he thinks he's invincible but now she will only risk looking after him if he has some sort of protection for his skin, which i think it pretty sensible. I think I'll get a cool coat and a raincoat and she can decide on which depending on the weather, she is going to have him over the summer for a few weeks.
I just can't stop him bolting around with other dogs - life would have no pleasure for him.
You only realise the depths of emotion you have for the little buggers when they get hurt....but i can't allow that to cloud my judgement.

So true. They have to live their lives, don't they Smile

Maybe for the summer buy him a dog
t-shirt, they have them on ebay.
Whippets love to run and my father's and sister always end up with little cuts every now and then as whippets have thin fur coverage.
