Tell me about cocker spaniels

And especially about cocker spaniels as a companion for a border collie? Do I need to stock up on the gin in order to stay sane?

We have a year old BC who is an absolute diamond and we have been looking for a second dog for a few weeks now. We have found an 11 month old working cocker dog, introduced them, visited a few times and they seem to get on like a house on fire so we have applied to adopt him. Will we live to regret it Hmm?

Working cockers and ordinary cockers are different, workers are more full on, bouncy etc., need stimulation - isn't that like a border though?

Stinkersmum · 24/05/2015 14:58

Sounds like the perfect companion for a BC to me. I love working cockers, they're smart, funny, loving and fab workers.

Funnily enough I have an 11 month old cocker and am looking to get him a Border Collie companion as they're pretty evenly matched in the intelligence and exercise stakes Grin

My old boy was a working cocker. He wasn't that bouncy, he was pretty steady and I have to say the best dog I've ever had. He was a dream to train. We did all the obedience tests and we worked him on shoots. He was utterly fabulous and everybody said so. He lived indoors with us and yet worked as well as the other gun dogs that lived in kennels. He was brilliant and a big act to follow for our new puppy.

You'll have fun. They're clever, eager little dogs that love to work and keep busy yet are also perfectly happy flat on their backs in front of the fire for hours. Enjoy. Smile

Yup Burning that sums up our BC to a tee.

DS has wanted a cocker for a while to train up as a flushing dog for his falconry hunting days.

They're clever, eager little dogs that love to work and keep busy yet are also perfectly happy flat on their backs in front of the fire for hours.

That sounds just like our BC once she's been out for a good walk or done some agility training Smile so I am hopeful that they will be a good match, they can certainly pace each other when running around the field together.

There is a reason they are so cute looking - it's the only reason you keep them as a pet after all the mischief they cause, one look of those eyes and all is forgiven until next time

I'm a big fan of working cockers- my brother has one and I adore him!

I have a BC and a rotty who are good friend's with their cocker cousin!

I have a working cocker who is 8.5 months now. She is mad as a hatter and full of beans but very loving (sometimes to much)!

Well, we're one step closer home check tomorrow!

I have a working cockeer, Eric, he is nearly 4 I think (although I lose track of time) and still mad as a can of spam. He's ace, incredibly lively and wants to be a person, also really clever, took no time to train seemed to be born knowing what to do. We got him as a companion for our border terrier although she has calmed down these days he shows no signs of ever slowing. I would think they would make a great companion for a bc.

EdwinaLIzzard · 29/05/2015 17:54

How did the home check go??

MumSnotBU · 29/05/2015 17:55

Mad as a hatter and full of beans

That's exactly word for word what I would say Smile

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 29/05/2015 22:15

Passed the home check so just the papers to sign and he can come home!

Oh so glad to hear this, I have known several cockers and they are all real characters, so loving and yes completely bonkers but great fun & company for your other dog.

Let us know how he settled in!

candlesandlight · 29/05/2015 22:21

We have a working cocker who is brilliant, great company, and never had any problems with her in the house, easy to train.
