Can dogs sulk? I think mine can.

Punterlab has been for few days to his most favourite dog sitter in the world. He loves her so much that if we meet her on a dog walk he would much rather go home with her! She is very experienced and does not spoil him. we picked him up yesterday we got a bit of a tail wag and then he got in the car, laid down and basically turned away! At home he went to sleep on his bed for most of the day, on the walk he was fine chasing with other dogs etc, ate his tea fine. Then disappeared off to another room and went to sleep. No cuddles or trying to get on my lap as usual. Also quiet this morning. Is he cross because he no longer with her or just confused ? Or sulking?

Maybe he's just relaxing, after an exciting few days. My lab likes to chill out and be on his own more if we've been away or had lots of visitors.

My old boy used to sulk. DFil used to call in sometimes on his way to the farm and take my dog with him. Sometimes he'd call in but wouldn't be able to take the dog and then the dog would sit by the door and sulk. He really did have a hang dog expression. Trouble was he'd get so stupidly excited when DFil called in and would expect to go off with him every time. He really did sulk when he couldn't go.

Mine sulks when we come back from holiday. Happy to eat, go for walks etc, but point blank ignores us no fuss nothing. We've got used to it now. Our other dog goes mad with excitement that we have come home but boyo just does a face and skulks off to his basket!

I have a Greyhound and they are the canine masters of sulking. We came home from 2 weeks away last week, when I went to pick the dog up from kennels he didn't even acknowledge me, and seemed reluctant to get in the car. He ignored us all for a few days after coming home and tbh I'm not surprised. Judging by what the kennel owner has told me, he had a better holiday than we did (and ours was pretty fantastic!). From what I can gather he was barely in a kennel, he spent the majority of his time hanging out in reception, mingling with the kennel owners dogs and just mooching about the place. He made some lovely doggy friends and he must've been gutted to come home!

The Poodle we had when I was a child used to sulk. He would go to the corner of the room, sit down facing the wall, and refuse to speak to anyone for hours.
TheCunnyFunt He did the same thing as your Greyhound (I love Greyhounds) when staying on a farm while we were on vacation. We all missed him madly and he couldn't be bothered to even say hello to us when we went to collect him!

My cat also sulks terribly. When my parents bought her (this was before I was born, the cat's slightly older than me) they were actually warned that the mother cat was famous for sulking and the kittens might take after her! Grin

Funny how what's really annoying in humans is so cute in animals! Smile

well we are almost forgiven now, punter lab will put up with a tummy rub and is now staying in the same room as us in the evening. Glad to know it is not uncommon.

We used to find with our first boxer that he was a bit like that for the first few days after he came home from the kennels. He was always happy to see us and I think it was just adjusting back to home life by himself. That and the fact that he was usually pretty tired from playing and needed to catch up on some sleep.

Our current boxer is the same. Always v happy to see us but it's like he puts up a do not disturb sign as soon as he gets home to his own bed.

KiwiJude · 24/05/2015 21:03

Oh, and KiwiBoxer sulks something fearful. If he thinks he's been slighted he'll sit facing away from us but will turn his head ever so slightly towards us to give us the stink eye. It's so funny, and he gets even more sulky when we laugh at him Grin His sulks don't last long though.

Ohh yes. Our late westie was a Sulker. He was 100% clean and trustworthy in the house, except for when collected from kennels after a holiday.
He would walk into the middle of the kitchen, glare at you and pee on the floor. Every. Single. Time.
He'd have a wee outside before going into the house but you could practically see his eyes narrow with the effort of squeezing a bit more out in protest.

He'd then avoid all eye contact for about 24 hours, after which he'd deem you forgiven and normality would resume.

Our first dog used to sulk.

Second one was too pudding-headed to sulk.

tomatodizzymum · 25/05/2015 12:07

Our lab sulks too. All morning he was following me everywhere, he seemed down and sulky Sad He did see one of his buddies out in the horse field this morning (GSD belonging to a neighbour) but he's not allowed to go because he goes off with him. I'm going to take him out at lunchtime and see if we can find his buddy, in an attempt to cheer him up!
