I'm in need of sympathy and hand holding. DH has just gone off on an emergency vet dash (20 miles to nearest OOH!). I was with DDog in the woods just now. All normal until he went under a bush and screamed. Came out with his thigh torn - looks like a raw leg of lamb. I phoned DH who got a neighbour to sit with the DC (in bed). Fortunately I was only five minutes away. We've loosely dressed it so he doesn't worry it too much.

It probably isn't serious - he wasn't bleeding out - 'just' a flesh wound but looked bloody awful and he was so upset.

It'll be a long wait for news though.

I need to do a job application with a deadline tomorrow...

Oh dear. Have a hand.

Could it just be a skin tear? They can look awful.

Hope it's all ok. Don't they put you through the wringer sometimes?

Floralnomad · 11/05/2015 21:02

Hopefully it looks worse than it actually is ,fingers crossed that he's home soon .

moosemama · 11/05/2015 21:14

Hope he's ok and back home with you soon.

My younger dog did something similar to me last year, but in our back garden. Still don't have a clue how he did it, especially as he was only out of my line of sight for less than a minute. He came in with a big patch of flesh missing off his side, so you could see muscle etc - very similar no dripping blood, just a gaping patch with no flesh on it. I was horrified and rushed him to the vet immediately - fortunately we live across the road from the surgery.

They stapled him back together and a few weeks of wearing a rather fetching VW camper tshirt to cover the wound later, he was absolutely fine. You can't even see the scar now, despite him being a thin-skinned, fine furred Lurcher.

We were lucky that he's such a daft creature he just stood there and let the vet staple him there and then, but don't be surprised if they decide they need to either sedate him to deal with it properly or maybe patch him up and wait until tomorrow to do it under GA.

Asleeponasunbeam · 11/05/2015 21:24

He's been sedated and is being patched up. Vet thought it looked nasty but was superficial. Will know more when they can investigate under GA.

Sounds just like yours, Moosemama. I wonder what did it though.

My young cocker did something similar, he ran into a branch and tore his chest open, luckily it was superficial, still needed 40 odd stitches.....

moosemama · 11/05/2015 21:34

Phew! Pleased to hear he's ok and like my boy's injury it wasn't as bad as it looked.

Pip's injury looked really small once they'd stapled him back together.

The only thing I could think of with my boy was that he possibly crashed into the fence panel on his way down the side of the house to the back door. I even went out to look for the missing chunk of flesh, but it was nowhere to be seen. Confused

I wonder if your boy could have caught his leg on something like a particularly sharp twig or snapped branch?

Asleeponasunbeam · 11/05/2015 21:40

I thought maybe he'd been grabbed by a fox? But it's more likely to have been a sharp branch or something. I'll go back and look tomorrow in case there's broken glass or similar.

Glad he's ok - my cat did something similar last year - she had a horrible gaping wound on her hind leg - the vet said it was most likely caused by barbed wire - she had stitches and antibiotics and was right as rain soon afterwards- her fur's so thick you can't even tell where it was now!

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 11/05/2015 23:26

My brother did this when he was younger. He fell out of a tree and ripped his knee on barbed wire. Pulled a perfect triangle of skin away from his knee. Doctor had to sew it back up. Bleurgh.

Glad pooch is ok.

Asleeponasunbeam · 12/05/2015 20:26

He's in a lot of pain and so very miserable. Apart from his prescribed painkillers, what on earth can I do to make him more comfortable. He's just crying all the time or lying panting. Obviously can't get comfortable. Poor dog.

If he he's panting and crying a lot and really can't settle, I'd give the vet a call and ask if they can up his pain meds.

It's worth trying some Rescue Remedy to try and help him calm down though.

We've had some tail wagging this morning!
