Half check collar?

Claire236 · 09/05/2015 19:58

I'm getting a puppy at the weekend and have been looking at puppy classes. One recommended a half check collar. I googled it as I didn't know what they were and they don't look very nice. Would this be something just for classes? Wouldn't it be better for pup to wear same collar at classes as he would be normally? Am I asking totally stupid questions?

I would avoid any trainer that recommended that type of thing and yes you should use the same equipment at classes as you will be using normally ,I would look at a harness for walking .

Claire236 · 09/05/2015 20:51

Thank you. That's what I was thinking but based on instinct rather than knowledge. I'm finding buying things a bit of a minefield so will probably be back with more questions

I would second a harness, especially for training classes much kinder on the pup.

I use martingale collars for my dogs, which are a bit like a half check - but are fitted to not pinch at all, just tighten snugly. They are very commonly used with sighthounds as they can't slip over their slender heads.

Talk to the trainer about why they recommend this collar

Claire236 · 09/05/2015 22:00

Thanks. Will look into both harnesses and martingale collars. Have been recommended puppy classes so won't be going to place that suggested half check collar

Have a look for KC Good Citizen 'puppy foundation classes'. They should
use positive reinforcement methods and be able to help with any breed specific queries to make training fun for both of you. www.thekennelclub.org.uk/training/good-citizen-dog-training-scheme/

I came across KC Good Citizen classes when I was looking for local puppy classes. I found somewhere that sounded really good but they charge £75 for 6 hour long classes which seemed a lot to me.

Half check collars do not need to be cruel. Different things to pinch collars, which IMO are completely unecessary.

Depending on your dog's breed, you might find he can slip a conventional collar. If you have the half check it tightens to the extent where he can't get his head out, but at the same time it won't strangle him. They were great for my old dog.

Claire236 · 10/05/2015 19:17

He's a cairn x parsons jack Russell. I thought they looked cruel but asked as I've never had any experience with them and didn't really know how they work.

I'm going to get a harness for walking and flat collar for training. Had personal recommendation for classes also listed on kennel club website so asked them what they suggested. Week 1 of the classes is actually without the dogs to discuss, food, equipment etc. Doesn't start until 23 June by which time pup will be 16 weeks.

Thanks. I intend on starting training but am not really sure about techniques so will have a look at both of those links.

Gwen Bailey's book the Perfect Puppy is great for basics and training ideas Smile

Claire236 · 12/05/2015 18:52

You're the 2nd person to recommend that so just got it on my kindle. Got everything except puppy now!

Smile I do suggest it often as the, if you're only going to read one book about raising a puppy type book :)
Best way to have all ready before you get pup, I'm so puppy broody, but just can't afford another one Sad

Claire236 · 15/05/2015 20:53

Picked puppy up this afternoon. He's had a good explore and made friends with my sons. He's now whining off and on since my boys went to bed. If he's missing them we could be in for a long night when he's on his own! Will see how it goes

Well if he's too noisy, I think you should give him to me! (Not that I'm
Puppy broody or anything, oh no, not me, just a totally selfless act to ensure you get your sleep!) and come on, PICS! Wink

Claire236 · 16/05/2015 16:11

He was little star last night so think he's a keeper but thanks for your kind selfless offer. Had little whine but then not a peep all night. So far he's been great.
