Getting puppy next weekend - any advice

We get a terrier cross pup next weekend and are still to buy bed, lead, toys etc. Any product recommendations would be helpful.

Also whilst I'll be taking him to puppy classes any training advice would be welcome. I'm most concerned about him settling at night as he's used to both his litter mates and other dogs.

Going to get tags, get him chipped and insured (once we can think of a name!)

I realise this is very vague but trying to be prepared in every way imaginable for our new arrival.

Are you going to crate train him? IMHO that's the best way to keep him safe and settled when you can't be with him (for short periods during the day) and at night. A lot of people view them as cages but that's not the case if used correctly.

I'd get lots of toys - squeaky, tuggy things. Poo bags and disposable gloves. Get vet recommendations from people you know with dogs. Read books like Gwen Bailey The Perfect Puppy if you haven't already. Puppy-proof the area he will be in - no wires, cables etc. good luck! Enjoy him.

Thanks. Wasnt planning on crate training but must admit I hadn't really considered it which I will now.

Haven't read any books but have read loads online. I'd have bought a few toys but everything I've read suggests having loads of toys.

Trying to train my children to put their stuff away or risk it being chewed. Had a puppy years ago who chewed everything so have postponed buying new table until puppy stops chewing!

Am really excited to get him but also worried about settling him into our family.

Bitter apple spray is very good to spray on things you don't want chewed. A crate, and a puppy pen are even better. If you read back through the threads in this section there are lots of threads with lots of advice as how to train new pups and what they require.

Haven't heard of bitter Apple spray. Will have to get some. To protect all my shoes if nothing else!!

I had a look at previous threads but only the first page. Will go through a few more pages.

In my view there is no reason for puppies to be chewing tables or shoes (on a regular basis - accidents do happen) unless they are unsupervised or under stimulated. But then I'm a fan of crates and pens to protect them & my furniture Wink

Have ordered a crate and loads of toys so between that and my 2 boys puppy shouldn't be under stimulated. More worried about the opposite hence the crate so everyone knows that's the puppy's space. Now getting bewildered by the sheer array of harnesses on the market and their confusing sizing

Cuddles and snuggles. I cuddled my lab pup and look back with fond memories at the photos. She's too big to do that now with obvs, but it gave us a huge bond. She adores me.

Was very happy when we met pup that after a few excitable minutes he happily settled on my lap so my youngest could get acquainted. Ds2 isn't great with dogs having not had much to do with them but we were able to spend quite a while just us and the pup and by the time we left he wanted to take pup home with us. Still can't agree on a name though.
