New Puppy/Slug/Lungworm panic

We are picking up our puppy next weekend and are pretty good to go, but I am having a bit of a meltdown/panic about slugs.

Our downstairs is pretty open plan and puppy's crate is in the back of the downstairs - kitchen/family room by the back door. BUT we are endlessly finding slugs on our kitchen floor in the middle of the night.

Nothing in the day, but if you venture downstairs at night on a warm evening there will invariably one or two on the floor. Apart from being fucking revolting and making me feel sick, I know that it is really dangerous for a young puppy to eat slugs or snails as it carried a real danger of causing Lungworm.

We have tried blocking every orifice we can find, but the house is an old Victorian one and it seems they just find a new way in. Most recently, it appears that they are somehow getting in and flattening themselves enough to squirm through the kitchen unit kickboards .

Although puppy will be crated at night, I am terrified that one will crawl into the crate and she will eat it. I can't put down slug pellets as these will be toxic to her and I don't know what to do. Even if I moved her crate into a another part of the house - the wooden floor and open plan-ness means that nowhere is guaranteed to be slug free.

Is there such a thing as puppy safe slug pellets? Or something better?

Doesn't salt do the trick? Behind the kickboards.

Register with your vet. Treat puppy monthly with advocate, which covers lungworm.

Then try to attract a pet hedgehog to your garden Grin

barking A friend told me to do the advocate thing but I thought it was not suitable for an 8 week old puppy? Maybe I am wrong which would be great and really put my mind at rest.

And yes, I just read up on how to attract Hedgehogs to your garden Blush

Has anyone tried copper tape? I am seriously thinking of encircling my entire house in it Grin

Don't panic so much. Eating a slug doesn't guarantee lungworm. The risk is reasonably low. One slug eaten doesn't a disaster make.

Make an appointment with your vet and explain the problem. The vet will prescribe Advocate or similar and that will be that. Your puppy will be fine until Tuesday.

Just use Advocate, and it'll be fine.

Alas, it seems like if you have a slug problem, nothing works to get rid of them - our last house had terrible problems with them in the kitchen

As well as advocate there is also Milbemax which is safe as long as the pup weighs more than one kilo. Regular monthly treatment has shown to prevent clinical disease.
