Super super excited to pick up our whippet puppy tomorrow! I've been wanting a whippet for ever such a long time! He's 10 weeks old and will joining our family tomorrow ekkk! He will be our first pet, I've had dogs growing up but that was years ago, I've got all the bits I think I need but would love to hear of anything else I've missed or recommendations from you guys :-)

So far I've got -

  • sleeping crate, (going to start in our bedroom and work our way into kitchen slowly)
  • food/bowls etc
  • toys
  • car seat belt
  • bedding
  • puppy pads
  • lead/collar etc
  • appointment with vet for jabs and microchipping
  • a whole lot of love!

Anything else?

Also, can anyone recommend a good insurance company?

TIA!

Can't think of any extras you may need. Petplan are good for all breeds and fair pricing. Good luck with puppy -looking forward to seeing some photos too.

Toys, a big soft toy as a mummy substitute as he will miss his mum (harmless filling in it tho) an old duvet and blankets. Puppy chews, a brush
Info about puppy socialisation class - our vets does this. Enjoy! Smile

A book! Bonding With Your Dog by Victoria Schade is good, any of Pat Miller's clicker training books are great too... The Other End Of The Leash by Patricia McConnell is superb.
You may find that the puppy training pads are superfluous; it can actually add confusion to encourage piddling indoors initially and then try to move them to outdoors only.

how exciting!

we used an adaptil collar for the first four weeks - obviously I don't know what he would have been like without it but he was very chilled and seemed to take everything in his stride so it certainly didn't do any harm

agree with pp about puppy pads - we never used them

fingers crossed you won't have too many accidents but for the inevitable times when you don't manage to watch him like a hawk for the entire time he's awake make sure you stock up on simple solution - it helps break down the odours so that dogs don't keep weeing on the same spot (bio washing powder solution can do the same thing)

I'd use a harness rather than collar and lead - much more comfortable while they're learning to walk on a loose lead

and don't throw away any boxes for a few weeks - they were our pup's favouritest thing in the world for a while!

Basil said what I was going to say about harnesses and boxes! Don't put a lead on his collar, their necks are very sensitive and easily damaged, collars are for displaying tags.
Any cardboard or plastic bottles that are going into the recycling bin should be given to the puppy beforehand :) a whole, raw cabbage, and ice cubes are good for teething. Some long toys (like plaited fleece, or those stuffingless long raccoons) so the puppy can still bite as it needs to do, without your hands being the target every single time. (The toy will mean your hands will be covered in red scratches about 2% less)
Maybe nail clippers (not the guillotine kind, which are shit) so you can teach the puppy that having his nails handled is a very boring activity not even worth noticing.

Cheap toilet roll for picking up poos in the house and putting them straight into the toilet.
Maybe a wee raincoat, dogs like whippets and lurchers etc. have minimal fat reserves and flinch at every rain drop.

Thank you guys!
I've ordered the book someone up thread suggested Grin

I've also brought a harness this morning and had his tag engraved Smile

What is an adaptil collar?

Great odd about boxes and bottles! And the cabbage, hadn't heard of that!

We're picking him at 6pm so will post some photos either later or in the morning :-)

Oh, a snuggly fleece from Equafleece! Nicest dog coats in the world and fabulous quality. I don't make 'em, just a fan.

AJNH · 30/04/2015 07:08

Here he is Grin

Some some said about something called 'simple' up thread? What is this and where can I buy it?

Oh my, A BABY WHIPPET!

Loooove whippets. Oh, he is so damn cute!!

(That is all, sorry - gush, gush but no actual help Grin)

basildonbond · 30/04/2015 07:14

He's gorgeous Smile

Simple Solution - you can get it from places like Pets at Home - it completely gets rid of the smell of wee and poo so he'll be less likely to toilet in the same place inside
