Very sadly we have had to make the decision to have Laradog2 PTS on Monday - she has terminal cancer and her quality of life has taken a massive nose dive in the last couple of days Sad

What's puzzling me is that her brother has been actively avoiding her for the last week or so. They used to be very close and I was always very worried about how one would cope without the other when the time came. Has anyone else experienced this?

Yes, I don't think it is unusual so don't worry. Just part of nature. Hugs to you xxxx

Just give him lots of hugs separately to his sister, they can tell something is amiss.

hugs to you all this w/e such a sad time xx

He knows she's dying. It's very common. When a mare starts to ignore her foal or a cow walks away from her calf, they recognise death is imminent. Sad for him and for you, but at least he understands and is unlikely to be searching desperately for her when she's gone.

I really feel for you. We are grieving a very favourite dog here and it's horribly hard.
I agree it sounds part of your other dog's natural understanding of what's happening and hopefully will help but terribly sad

Hi Lara, hope you're ok. We went through this in January. We lost our lovely female dog, she had lymphoma. We kept her going as long as she was still enjoying life, but she suddenly got much worse, and we put her to sleep.

We were very worried about her brother, because they were very close as a pair, but he's been ok. We let him see her body after the vet had been, but he didn't show any interest, or seem to notice any difference in her. He's been fine since then. We have a younger dog too, which I think has helped him. We always thought that when one died the other would pine, but he has surprised us.

I'm very sorry about Laradog2, it's a horrible thing to go through. We found though, that we were very upset in the few days before ours died, because we knew what was coming. The day she died was horrendous, but after that, it was almost a relief, as if a weight had been lifted, and she wasn't suffering anymore, and we all felt surprisingly better. Hope you feel better soon. Flowers

Instinctive response, so many causes of dying in the wild are actually infectious, this is what animals do.

Love and hugs to all of you.
