Puppy howling through the night- help

We brought our cockapoo pup home on Tuesday night aged 9 weeks. Last night was his first night in his crate, I left the door slightly open but he has howled and barked most of the night. Please tell me it will get better?! I know it's such early days but I hate to think of him distressed all night. He doesn't seem to like being left alone and was whimpering every time I left the room yesterday. Does anybody have any words of wisdom or just of comfort to tell me he will sleep through the night soon!

Yes your right nmg85 I wonder how all of those other people who have puppies cope with leaving them for longer periods? I have friends who leave there dogs all day for 5 days a week. Not everybody who owns a dog is at home all day are they surely? Luckily i have 2 weeks off with him now and am trying to leave him day by day a little bit longer until he is used to it. There are 4 of us in the house but he has taken a particular shine to me which is mighty sweet.

He is cute, luckily I work from home otherwise we wouldn't have got a dog as previously we were both out for 10 hours a day. For those odd days I am away I get someone to call in and see her, to start with it was let out to wee and some play but now they take her for a little walk. It costs about £6 for a 30min visit which I know won't be a long term solution but might be good for the next few weeks while the bladder is smaller and accidents can happen :-)

Luckily im a community nurse and work right by home so popping back won't be a problem at all. Some weeks i only work 2 days (if I've been on the weekend) so I'm glad its not everyday otherwise like you i wouldn't have had one. He is cute your right :-)

I wore an old t-shirt to bed and then used it to wrap up a fluffy hot water bottle for him to sleep with in his crate and left radio 2 on really quietly. He settled really quickly and we only had one restless night.

Mine is currently sat next to me with her reindeer antler chewing away quite happily but I need the toilet so that won't last :-) They are sensitive little beings and sometimes utterly exhausting! I know you said you might stop using the crate but just a suggestion if you want to try it again... do you cover it? We have a blanket over it so it is like a den it makes them feel more secure. Kong is a great idea for when alone, freezing it also helps when they are teething and also takes longer for them to get the food out.
