Kennels

We are probably getting a dog early next year. The circumstances are right for both us and the potential dog. We will be getting a puppy but don't know what exactly yet ( will prob depend what rescues are available)
The only thing putting me off is what to do during holidays. We have no family that could have a dog to stay and don't know anyone who could stay here while we are away. We would adapt any UK holidays to the dog but we have a holiday home abroad and often go for between 1 and 4 weeks at a time.
I know kennels vary hugely but IF we were able to find a good one would it be ok to leave a dog there for that long? Would the dog be unhappy?
We had dogs growing up but didn't go abroad much or if we did my Granparents lived in a Granny flat with us so it wasn't a problem.
Are there any alternatives I haven't thought of? My neighbour comes in twice a day to sort the cats out if I am away but she works so couldn't spend any time with the dog - in fact she has a dog of her own I often let out during the day so that's nt an option.

I think it would depend on the dog if it would settle in the kennels or not.

For long periods home boarding might be a better option.

Is that where they stay at someone's house?

yes Hoppinggreen

I use a homeboard for my dog fortunate as they are also my dogwalker when needed and my dog trainer also do day boarding

But he stays in her house with them and is treated the same as there own dog .Walks as needed garden to play in .They even have a paddling pool in the summer but homeboarders book up fast as she will only normally take 3,4 at a time

Just looked it up online and there are quite a few near us so it looks like a good option.
Dog ownership looks even more likely now - thank you!!!!

Hopping, we use homeboarding too. My two go to a smallholding, get filthy, wet and muddy every day, sleep on minders bed at nights and get a full Sunday lunch complete with yorkshire pudding!

They don't want to come home at the end of 'their' holiday Grin

Highly recommended!

Could you get a doggy passport, we're in the process of doing this right now

Hoppinggreen · 22/04/2015 14:35

We have considered it fudge but we are likely to get a biggish hairy breed and when our holiday home is would be very hot over summer ( and often at other times too)
It would also be a 6 hour Uk drive, overnight ferry and then 7 hour drive so really too far for all of us I think and taking a dog on a plane is very costly and I imagine very stressful for the dog. If we ever decided to go for the full 6 week holidays it mght be an option but I wouldn't really want to do it.
Home boarding looks good, I'm really grateful for the suggestions, no idea why I hadn't thought of it. We have been waiting a long time for our situation to be right for a dog and this was the one thing still holding us back.
We are away in October so the plan will be to get a dog early November as we won't be away until April or May at the earliest
