Going to see a mini Daxie today. Am I mad?!

Hello All,

Been having mooch on previous threads about Dachshunds and we are off to have a look at a female miniature short haired one this afternoon.

Have we completely lost the plot? I know they can be quite noisy, that doesn't trouble me too much because I'm slightly hard of hearing and can a never hear people at the door.

I'm just worried that, even if I do all the puppy classes, dog training etc it will still bark when it not necessary, not be housetrained, will be grumpy and no good at recall or mixing with other dogs.

I think I'm just feeling a bit nervous Blush

My dog walking agency has five miniature Dachshunds on the books. They're all absolute crackers, well socialised and friendly.

One has had recall issues and now only goes on a flexi lead. The others are all one hundred percent reliable.

One is a bit noisy when you first come to collect him, but soon calms down.

Thank you for responding.

Can I ask if you have a preference between the girls and boys. I'm pretty sure we'd like a girl but I open to considering a boy.

You do realise if you go and look you won't be able to say no...Grin

I know you're right Jem, but I'm trying to keep my sensible head on.

sensible head Ha! Grin Bet you're smitten already, can't be anything much sweeter than a miniature Dachshund puppy...

Make sure you get good insurance. They get a lot of back problems and you are looking at around £6k for MRI and surgery. I know one dog who has had spinal surgery 3 times. I do love the breed though. They have great characters.

We adopted one (long haired) a short while ago, just under 3 yrs old. He is a bit, ahem "enthusiastic" atm because he wasn't walked enough/given enough attention in his old home but he must have been shown lots of love because he is extremely friendly and despite not knowing us from Adam, has been nothing but kind and tries desperately hard to please. Constantly wagging his tail!

The only problem at the moment is that he is a bit too friendly, ie he follows one of us wherever we go! It's like having a toddler in the house. But hoping that will settle in the months/years to come.

A bit more barky than when he arrived but nothing excessive as yet (not going to let it develop further anyway). We used to have pointers (among other dogs) and apologies to pointer owners if I am about to cause offence but this dachshund is as smart as they come and about 15 times more intelligent than them (who, looking back, were a bit dim/over-bred poor things).

So, were you smitten? Smile

Oh my God. Fell in love immediately Blush.

I did have a sensible head for a good 10 minutes though. My mum was just perfect in everyday conceivable.

I will always insure my pets anyway, but always good advice to see! Thanks everyone
